Mavs' 28-0 run buries Warriors in blowout win

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 27 April 2021 23:28

The Golden State Warriors were stuck on 12 points for 9 minutes and 38 seconds, the NBA's longest scoring drought in almost a dozen years, during a 133-103 loss to the Dallas Mavericks on Tuesday.

The visiting Mavs scored 28 points during that stretch, matching the second-biggest scoring run in the NBA over the past two decades, according to Elias Sports Bureau data, behind only a 29-0 run by the Cleveland Cavaliers against the Milwaukee Bucks on Dec. 6, 2009. The New York Knicks also had a 28-0 run against the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 22, 2017.

"You want to turn the page," Warriors star Stephen Curry said. "You understand that the Mavs are a talented team -- they get paid to play basketball just like we do and some nights it looks like they get paid more across the board. So it's just a matter of us trying to remember who we are, remember our identity, not dwell on it too long, and find a way to keep our confidence and who we've shown ourselves to be this last little stretch."

The Warriors' drought started after Curry hit a 31-foot step-back 3-pointer to give Golden State a 12-11 lead with 8:40 remaining in the first quarter. Golden State didn't score again until a Jordan Poole 3 a minute into the second quarter.

The Warriors missed 18 consecutive shots, including nine 3-point attempts. Golden State did not attempt a free throw during the scoreless stretch of more than nine minutes. The Mavs were 8-of-18 from the floor, 5-of-7 from 3-point range and 7-of-7 from the free throw line during the span.

"I'm not that concerned about a nine-minute scoring drought," Warriors coach Steve Kerr said. "I'm concerned about defense. I'm concerned about a level of intensity and preparation and competitiveness. That's what was missing. I'm the head coach, and I did not have them ready to play, clearly."

The blowout significantly reduced any realistic hope the Warriors had of playing their way out of the Western Conference's play-in tournament. The 34-27 Mavs stayed in sixth place in the West standings with the win, a game ahead of the Portland Trail Blazers and 3½ games over the 10th-place Warriors. Dallas also claimed the tiebreaker over Golden State.

"Biggest game of the year and it was over before it started," Kerr said. "Really, really disappointing. We've got a young team. Of the guys who were out there tonight, I think we have only three guys who were in the playoffs. Tonight was kind of like a playoff game for Dallas. They lost last night. They knew we were on their heels.

"They came out like it was a playoff game, and we came out like it was an exhibition game."

Dallas had a 62-29 halftime lead, which was the Warriors' lowest-scoring half during Kerr's coaching tenure that started in 2014-15, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

"Everybody was pissed off because we didn't play the right way yesterday," said Mavs star Luka Doncic, who had 39 points and eight assists in 28 minutes before sitting out the fourth quarter. "I think that was it."

Dallas' dominant performance came on the heels of a 113-106 loss to the Sacramento Kings on Monday. The Mavericks fell behind 20-3 to start that game, prompting Doncic to wonder why the Mavs struggled to play with energy so often.

"It was the complete opposite from yesterday," Mavs power forward Maxi Kleber said. "It just felt crazy. They couldn't make any shots. We stepped out with the right energy, for sure, but they didn't make any shots, even open ones."

ESPN's Nick Friedell contributed to this report.

The biggest declaration of this young baseball season: Vladimir Guerrero Jr. now officially carries a very loud, very lethal and very powerful bat.

Guerrero launched three home runs and drove in seven runs in the host Toronto Blue Jays' 9-5 victory over the Washington Nationals on Tuesday. Two were off Max Scherzer, one of which was a laser-beam grand slam in the third inning that traveled 415 feet and had a 108-mph exit velocity.

That wasn't even his hardest or farthest home run of the night. In the fifth inning off Scherzer, Guerrero crushed one at 110.5 mph, 436 feet into the Florida night.

Guerrero is hitting .360/.484/.693 with seven home runs. At 22 years old, he became the youngest player ever with a three-homer, seven-RBI game. In the expansion era since 1961, only Boog Powell and Corey Seager were younger when they hit three home runs in a game. Vladimir Guerrero Sr., Vladdy's Hall of Fame father, never hit three home runs in a game. Dad was impressed with his son's historic game:

Senior can relate to one thing, however: He homered off Scherzer back in 2010, when he played for the Rangers and Scherzer was pitching for the Tigers, and again in 2011 when he was with the Orioles. The Guerreros join this list of father-son duos to homer off a Cy Young winner:

• Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. homered off Dennis Eckersley, Bob Welch and Rick Sutcliffe
• Hal McRae and Brian McRae homered off Eckersley
• Jose Cruz Sr. and Jr. homered off Orel Hershiser
• Vern Law and Vance Law homered off Gaylord Perry

More than the fun factoids, however, this feels like a statement game.

When the 2021 season began, everybody had climbed aboard the hype train of young superstars: Fernando Tatis Jr., Ronald Acuna Jr. and Juan Soto -- with good reason. Guerrero wasn't considered on their level.

When Guerrero came up in 2019 at age 20, he was good at the plate but not great. Meanwhile, Soto came up in 2018 at 19, became an immediate star and then tore it up in the World Series in 2019. Acuna came up in 2018, became an immediate star and then hit 41 home runs and stole 37 bases in 2019. Tatis came up in 2019 and was a dynamo of power and speed.

Guerrero arrived in the majors as perhaps the most ballyhooed prospect since Griffey Jr. reached the majors as a teenager in 1989. He was viewed as the best hitting prospect in a long time. Scouts were comfortable putting an 80-grade tool on his bat. In the minors, he hit for average, hit prodigious home runs and did it all while rarely striking out. He also showed much better plate discipline than his dad, who was one of the more notorious free swingers in the history of the game.

In this Tik Tok world of short attention spans, we expected immediate greatness from Guerrero, forgetting that baseball is hard and that, despite the glowing debuts from Soto, Acuna and Tatis, most young players need time to figure out major league pitching.

In Guerrero's case, his biggest issue in 2019 and 2020 wasn't a lack of power -- it was getting to that power. He hit too many balls on the ground.

The ideal launch angle for line drives and home runs is generally between 13 and 20 degrees. As a rookie, Guerrero's average launch angle was 6.7 degrees. In 2020, it fell to 4.6 degrees. So even though his hard-hit rate ranked in the 93d percentile in 2020, he hit .262/.329/.462 with nine home runs in 60 games. Better than a league-average hitter, but not near the numbers the other three young sluggers put up.

Guerrero also realized he needed to lose weight. He hired a personal trainer in the offseason and came to camp 42 pounds lighter.

"One day, I woke up from bed, looked in the mirror and said, 'That's it,'" Guerrero said on a recent Zoom call.

He worked on lifting the ball and his average launch angle is up to 10.6 degrees. He's more athletic and agile in the field and at the plate. His top sprint speed last year was way down at the 17th percentile. It's at the 45th percentile this year. A lighter Vladdy is a better Vladdy.

One thing I had wondered about heading into the season was whether the evaluators had simply overrated Guerrero's ability to hit elite velocity. Maybe the bat speed wasn't quite what everyone believed. Check his numbers against pitches of 95-plus mph:

2019: .184/.380/.368, 21.6% swing-and-miss rate

2020: .192/.222/.231, 20.9% swing-and-miss rate

(MLB average in 2019-2020 on 95-plus pitches: .247/.333/.415)

And so far in 2021 for Guerrero:

.400/.600/.727, 13.0% swing-and-miss rate (as the MLB average has dipped to .212)

The third homer he hit on Tuesday came off a 96.7-mph fastball from Kyle Finnegan, the fastest pitch he's hit for a home run in his career. It's a small sample size, just 15 plate appearances and 11 at-bats, but the swing-and-miss rate is down, a good sign that the improvement against fastballs can hold.

The other significant improvement he's made is with his plate discipline. His chase rate is down from 24.6% last year to 18.8%, and in this age of strikeouts, he has more walks than K's. And keep in mind he's largely done this without much help in the lineup so far. George Springer has yet to play. Teoscar Hernandez hasn't played since April 8. Bo Bichette is hitting .241 with a .295 OBP and Cavan Biggio is hitting .210 (after a three-hit night on Tuesday).

This is the Vladimir Guerrero scouts projected back in 2018 when he hit .381 in the minors: One of the best hitters in the game. Maybe even an MVP candidate. Make room on that train.

Shearburn Rolls To Dominant Kansas eNASCAR Win

Published in Racing
Tuesday, 27 April 2021 20:20

KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Chris Shearburn pulled away over the second half of Tuesday’s eNASCAR Coca-Cola iRacing Series stop at Kansas Speedway to become the seventh winner in as many races this year.

Shearburn, who fought tooth-and-nail with polesitter Ryan Luza during the first green-flag run at the virtual 1.5-mile oval, took control of the top spot with a short-pit strategy early and then dominated following a multi-car pileup in turn three that eliminated most of his competition near the front.

The Springfield, Ill., native led the final 40 laps after a short tussle with Isaac Gann and took his second career series victory by 1.838 seconds over runner-up Keegan Leahy.

“This is huge,” said Shearburn in victory lane. “This is by far my biggest win ever. First, I have to thank Steve Letarte and Letarte eSports for believing in me; he’s stuck with me ever since I got into this series, and ASUS North America for being onboard with us the last couple of weeks. Everyone at Coanda (Simsport) … Keegan, Mitchell, Bobby (Zalenski) and everyone put a ton of work into the setup.

“I can’t believe what we did tonight. This is, by far, my best race ever.”

Shearburn’s race-winning move came when he pitted on lap 41 of 134, two laps sooner than Luza, who gave up several seconds of on-track time due to tire fall-off and Shearburn’s pace after his pit stop.

When the green-flag cycle finally ended on lap 62, Shearburn found himself ahead of Luza and in the race lead. His road to victory wasn’t quite secure at that point, but Shearburn called it a pivotal moment.

“I really didn’t think I was ever going to be able to pull off a pass [for the lead],” Shearburn admitted. “I got close a couple of times. I was a lot closer than I thought I would be. I was glad I tried to short pit on Luza to get in front of him and get into clean air. That was the key, and it worked out.

“I was able to get the clean air on the pit stops and started pulling away from him before the yellow.”

A caution flag with 57 laps left, when John Gorlinsky made contact with Graham Bowlin exiting turn two, spun and collected Bob Bryant, re-stacked the field and led to the first of two restarts on the night.

Shearburn easily controlled the first restart, but behind him, Mitchell deJong got turned in front of the field from third after contact from behind by Logan Clampitt – sparking an 18-car pileup in the banking.

The crash eliminated deJong, Luza, Bobby Zalenski and numerous other frontrunners from contention, while Shearburn was ahead of the chaos and escaped unscathed along with Logan Clampitt, Isaac Gann and Leahy.

DeJong, however, could not continue and finished a disappointing 35th after qualifying second.

“Very unfortunate. That was a lot of little things gone wrong there,” said deJong. “I thought we’d have a little bit more patience … but I guess not. It’s a hard one to swallow, but we’ll take the positives from this and move on to the next race.”

The final restart of the night came with 47 laps to go and featured a three-wide battle for supremacy at the front of the field, with Shearburn and Clampitt firing off from the front row and Gann sticking his nose into the fray as well.

Gann used the inside lane to poke ahead on lap 91 and actually cleared Shearburn two laps later, pacing a total of four laps altogether before Shearburn reclaimed control for good in turn one on the 95th lap.

Leahy got past for second shortly after that and could only watch as Shearburn pulled out a 1.838-second lead by the time the checkered flag waved to conclude the 201-mile event.

“I needed clean air,” admitted Leahy of his 23XI Racing Toyota. “It’s such an advantage [being] up front. Chris and I work together, so we were on the same setups and practiced all week together. He’s very competent at this track, to say the least, and I just didn’t have anything for him at the end.”

Gann crossed third in a solid day for Kligerman Sport, followed by Clampitt’s William Byron eSports Chevrolet and the Stewart-Haas eSports Ford of Graham Bowlin.

Jim Beaver eSports’ Michael Guest, JR Motorsports’ Michael Conti, McLaren Shadow’s Blake Reynolds, the second Stewart-Haas car of Dylan Duval and Roush Fenway Racing’s Nathan Lyon closed the top 10.

Blade Whitt attempted a one-stop strategy call and led 14 laps near the midpoint of the race before the two cautions past halfway scuttled his plan.

Whitt finished 13th, but was still the hard charger after starting last.

Luza, who led qualifying to kick off the night, was scored 36th after his involvement in the lap-83 pileup.

Panthers end playoff drought, seal berth with W

Published in Hockey
Tuesday, 27 April 2021 22:40

For just the sixth time in franchise history, the Florida Panthers are a playoff team. Which is not an achievement many predicted for them prior to this season.

"We knew what kind of character we had in the room. What kind of players we were. That's just outside noise we didn't need to listen to," said forward Frank Vatrano, who had the game-winning goal in Florida's 7-4 win over the Nashville Predators on Tuesday, sealing the postseason berth. "We didn't listen to that stuff at the beginning of the season. And now we're in the playoffs."

Florida last made the Stanley Cup Playoff tournament in 2016, losing in the first round to the New York Islanders. The Panthers haven't won a playoff series since 1995-96, when they advanced to the Stanley Cup Final before losing to Colorado. Since entering the NHL as an expansion team in 1993-94, the Panthers have only made six playoff appearances -- not counting their qualification round loss to the Islanders in last summer's expanded postseason in Toronto.

Coach Joel Quenneville said that the low expectations for the Panthers worked in their favor.

"There's nothing wrong with being the underdog. There's nothing wrong when you're up against it and nobody gives you the time of day. There's nothing wrong when you're under-appreciated, and maybe some nights the other team is not as excited playing that game. But we did what we had to do," he said. "We get a lot of respect [from other teams] because we play hard. It's a hard two points. That's a complement to our team. Everybody in our division thinks we're ready to play."

The Panthers entered the game against the Predators needing a win to clinch a playoff spot in the Central Division. They rallied three times to defeat Nashville, as forward Jonathan Huberdeau had two goals and three assists. Rookie goalie Spencer Knight stopped all nine shots he faced after replacing starter Sergei Bobrovsky (four goals on 21 shots) to begin the third period.

Florida is currently second in the division with 69 points, two points in back of first-place Carolina, which has two games in-hand.

"It's great, especially with all the sacrifice we made this season. With how tough it's been," Vatrano said. "You spend a lot more time around the rink than you usually do. You come in every day, around the guys all the time. You could get sick of each other sometimes, but it really brought us together."

The Panthers are currently in line to face the Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round, in what would be the first playoff meeting ever between the Florida teams.

Nets clinch; 'Eyes on bigger things,' Nash says

Published in Basketball
Tuesday, 27 April 2021 22:12

The Brooklyn Nets clinched a playoff berth Tuesday night after defeating the Toronto Raptors 116-103 in Tampa, Florida. They are the first Eastern Conference team to confirm a spot in the NBA's postseason.

Now, the Nets can slip no lower than sixth in the Eastern Conference standings.

"It's great," first-year Nets coach Steve Nash said of securing a place in the playoffs. "I think we have our eyes on bigger things, but it's a nice first step to clinch a berth. For this group, facing all we've faced, to be in this position with 10 games left is very positive."

Nets guard Joe Harris said James Harden -- who remains sidelined with a hamstring strain -- mentioned clinching a postseason berth to several Nets players on Tuesday. Brooklyn big man Jeff Green said that after all of the injuries the team has been through -- including playing large stretches without Harden, Kevin Durant, Tyler Johnson and others -- having a guaranteed playoff spot is rewarding but not the team's final goal.

"It is something that we can hang our hats on," Green said. "That's something we can be proud of, but we also have to realize that that's not the goal. ... We have to take on the next step, and that's focusing on what we need to accomplish in the playoffs to get to our ultimate goal."

The Nets occupy the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference. The Philadelphia 76ers trail the Nets by 1½ games.

"We have to be excited with some of the things that we've done, but we can't be content and we have to continue to work," Green said.

The Nets have 10 games remaining in the regular season and are playing just four of them at home in Barclays Center. Brooklyn has yet to put together a significant run with a fully healthy roster.

Harden -- who is shooting and doing strength work -- still has "a ways to go," according to Nash, before he will return. Nash added that the team might not get many -- if any -- games with a full-strength roster before the postseason. The Nets are also without Nicolas Claxton, who has missed five games while in the league's COVID-19 safety protocols.

The Nets' Big Three of Durant, Harden and Kyrie Irving still have played just seven games together.

"I think everyone's in a positive mood," Nash said of the group. "And just want to keep building, keep getting better, keep improving before the playoffs start, which is in a limited amount of time."

Hazard keen to help in 2nd leg: 'My body's better'

Eden Hazard has said he feels "in better condition" and ready to make an impact in Real Madrid's end-of-season run after coming off the bench in their 1-1 Champions League draw with former club Chelsea.

Hazard played the last 25 minutes of the Champions League semifinal first leg at the Alfredo di Stefano stadium on Tuesday night as Madrid looked to take an advantage to Stamford Bridge for the second leg on May 5.

"I just want to go step-by-step, of course I want to play, I want to be on the pitch," Hazard told BT Sport. "In the last game [against Real Betis] I played 15 minutes, today I played a bit more. We have a couple of good games to play until the end of the season. I just want to be ready for them.

- Hunter: Chelsea's work ethic, guile and class can't beat Madrid

"I feel in better condition, my body's better, so I'm just happy I can play again."

Hazard spent seven seasons at Stamford Bridge from 2012 to 2019, winning the Premier League twice and becoming one of the competition's outstanding players.

Since joining Real Madrid in a €100 million deal, he has suffered a series of injuries that have limited his impact, scoring just four goals in two seasons.

"It's always good to play against friends," he said, when asked about facing ex-teammates. "I have a couple of friends over there. Now I'm a Real Madrid player so I just want to win. It doesn't matter if it's against Chelsea or another team."

Christian Pulisic put Chelsea ahead after 14 minutes, latching onto Antonio Rudiger's long ball and rounding Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois before firing past two defenders on the line.

Karim Benzema equalised 15 minutes later when Marcelo's ball into the box was headed on by Casemiro and Eder Militao, as the French striker struck on the volley for his 71st Champions League goal.

"It could be better and it could be worse!" Hazard said. "We have a second leg to play over there. We have to go there to try to win the game."

Coach Zinedine Zidane said it was "a fair result" and described Benzema's strike as "impressive."

"We can't score three or four goals in every game," he said. "It isn't easy playing every three days against really good teams. We believe we can do it. We'll go there to try to win the game, we know we have to score there."

The BCCI is likely to postpone the fourth edition of the Women's T20 Challenge owing to the potential unavailability of overseas players in the wake of restrictions imposed by several countries on travel to and from India, where a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic has led to several world-record daily spikes of cases this month.

Although the BCCI has made no announcement on the 2021 T20 Challenge yet, ESPNcricinfo understands that officials have internally acknowledged the several logistical challenges involved in flying in overseas players from countries like England, Australia, South Africa, the West Indies, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. Last year, 12 overseas players, including Deandra Dottin, Sune Luus, Danielle Wyatt, and Nathakan Chantham, featured in the three-team tournament.

On Tuesday, Australia suspended all direct passenger flights from India due to the unprecedented spike in Covid-19 cases. The country had already been put on the 'red list' of countries by the UK.

The T20 Challenge is normally played during the IPL playoffs week. If the same window were to be identified for this year, the tournament would have been held in the last week of May when the men's IPL playoffs are scheduled. Since its inception, the T20 Challenge is held at a single venue, with the 2020 edition played in Sharjah when the IPL was staged in the UAE, and the 2019 event held in Jaipur.

While the IPL 2021 is being conducted in a caravan model - one stadium each in two cities are in operation at one time - across six cities, it is understood that the board had been considering Delhi as a likely host for the women's competition before the second wave of the pandemic wreaked havoc in India.

The T20 Challenge started in 2018 as a one-off exhibition match comprising two teams. Since the 2019 edition, the competition has featured three teams - Velocity, Supernovas, and Trailblazers - competing in a total of four games, including the final, with premier India players Mithali Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur, and Smriti Mandhana the captains.

Harbaugh guarantees Lamar's fifth-year option

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 27 April 2021 19:56

OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- For those who had any doubts, Baltimore Ravens coach John Harbaugh said Tuesday that the team will pick up quarterback Lamar Jackson's fifth-year option before Monday's deadline.

"Guarantee it," Harbaugh said on "The Rich Eisen Show."

Jackson will make a guaranteed $23.1 million in 2022, a significant raise from his $1.7 million salary this season. This will be the highest fifth-year option in the league next season, tying that of Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

By exercising Jackson's option, the Ravens will squash the speculation that the team will allow Jackson to "graduate" after four seasons. An NFL Network analyst recently suggested the Ravens could trade up to draft a quarterback this week and move on from Jackson before his heightened salary-cap hit limits Baltimore's spending.

Harbaugh made it clear that won't be the case.

"He's definitely going to be our quarterback," Harbaugh said. "That's the plan, absolutely."

Jackson, 24, has won more games (30) than any other NFL quarterback since taking over as Baltimore's starter midway through the 2018 season. and he became the second unanimous league MVP in 2019. He is the first player in NFL history to produce 5,000 yards passing and 2,500 yards rushing in his first three seasons.

Harbaugh pointed out how the Ravens have scored more points than any other team in Jackson's two full seasons as a starting quarterback.

"I feel like it all points to one thing and the thing he talks about all the time: He wants to win a Super Bowl," Harbaugh said. "I think he's a very unique guy. He's a guy that's different in a lot of ways than any quarterback that's ever played. Lamar is somebody that just kind of breaks the mold a little bit. He does it in a way that a lot of people didn't anticipate. They didn't see this coming. He's very determined -- and we're very determined -- to prove those people wrong."

In March, Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta said the team is "confident and committed" to getting a long-term deal done with Jackson.

Five-time world champion Floyd Mayweather will return to the ring to face YouTube sensation-turned-boxer Logan Paul at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on June 6 on Showtime pay-per-view and Fanmio, it was announced Tuesday night.

"Logan Paul and I are going to fight at Hard Rock Stadium. Mayweather Promotions, Fanmio and Showtime will team up to give you an epic event," Mayweather wrote on Instagram.

The fight was originally scheduled for February but was postponed indefinitely until Tuesday's announcement. In February, it was billed as a "special exhibition."

The announcement didn't specify how many rounds they will fight or what size gloves they will use. Additional details on rules of the fight and the undercard will be released soon, according to Fanmio, a platform that connects fans with celebrities through online experiences.

Mayweather (50-0, 27 KOs), 44, retired after defeating MMA star Conor McGregor by 10th-round TKO in a boxing match in 2017 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Mayweather has won titles as a junior lightweight, lightweight, junior welterweight, welterweight and junior middleweight.

Logan Paul (0-1 0 KOs), 26, is the older brother of Jake Paul, who recently defeated Ben Askren by first-round knockout.

Logan Paul lost a split decision to fellow YouTube star KSI, whose real name is Olajide William Olatunji, in November 2019.

NCAA prez Emmert given extension through 2025

Published in Breaking News
Tuesday, 27 April 2021 19:56

NCAA president Mark Emmert has received a contract extension through 2025, the association's board of governors announced Tuesday.

Emmert, who has served as NCAA president since November 2010, had been under contract through October 2023 with an option through 2024. The NCAA announced the extension as part of a news release that included other action items from the board, including a commitment to modernize rules around name, image and likeness.

Emmert's extension received unanimous approval from the board.

In March, Georgetown president Jack DeGioia, the chair of the NCAA's board of governors, gave Emmert a vote of confidence amid mounting criticism about inequities during the men's and women's basketball tournaments. Several commissioners and athletic directors voiced concerns about Emmert's leadership in media reports in late March and early April.

Emmert, in a letter to staff, acknowledged that "a number of balls were dropped" at the NCAA women's basketball tournament in San Antonio, and that a full review would be conducted.

"I think it would be fair to say that Mark took this very, very seriously and all of my conversations with him -- we have had several over the last 10 days -- at no point did I ever have the sense that he wasn't engaging this with the greatest seriousness possible," DeGioia told The Associated Press in late March.

Earlier this month, the Greater Baton Rouge Business Journal reported that backchannel efforts were underway to recruit Emmert to become LSU's new president. Emmert, 68, served as LSU's chancellor from 1999 to 2004, and is close with athletic director Scott Woodward and others around the university and the athletic program.

He served as president at the University of Washington from 2004 until 2010, when he began his duties at the NCAA.

But Emmert's name did not appear on a list of candidates from LSU's presidential search committee.
