Man Utd fans block Carrington in Glazers protest

Published in Soccer
Thursday, 22 April 2021 03:04

A group of Manchester United supporters have broken into the club's Carrington training base in protest at the failed plans for a European Super League.

A group of around 20 fans entered United's training ground on Thursday morning with banners which read "Glazers out" and "we decide when you play."

- Marcotti: Super League suspended: The chaos explained
- Man United owners issue ESL apology
- Man United executive vice chairman resigns

It is understood they also blocked both entrances while players and staff were arriving for training ahead of Sunday's Premier League match with Leeds United.

United announced their intention to withdraw from the ESL on Tuesday evening following widespread criticism over the controversial plans unveiled 48 hours earlier.

Chairman Joel Glazer issued an apology to fans on Wednesday but the scheme -- seen as a coup by 12 of the powerful clubs in the world -- has reignited calls for a change of ownership at Old Trafford.

Vegas wins, 1st in NHL to clinch playoff berth

Published in Hockey
Thursday, 22 April 2021 00:05

LAS VEGAS -- The Vegas Golden Knights are no longer the new kids on the NHL block.

They're a perennial powerhouse.

Jonathan Marchessault scored twice, and the Golden Knights became the first NHL team to clinch a playoff berth, beating the San Jose Sharks 5-2 Wednesday night for their eighth straight victory.

Vegas, which leads the NHL with 33 wins and 68 points, also became the fourth franchise in NHL history to make the playoffs in each of its first four seasons. The Golden Knights lost to the Washington Capitals in the 2018 Stanley Cup Final in their inaugural season.

"It's an accomplishment in this league; 31 teams to make the playoffs," said Peter DeBoer, who has led two teams to Stanley Cup Final appearances during his coaching career. "What this franchise has done so far is unheard of. I don't know if you'll ever see that again out of an expansion team.

"I wouldn't trade our group for any other group out there."

The Golden Knights improved to 15-1-3 all-time against the Sharks in regular-season meetings, including a perfect 7-0-0 this season. Vegas also improved to 18-4-2 at home.

"We've been doing good against [San Jose]," Marchessault said. "We seem to be playing the right way. It's good to have success against a divisional team like that."

Mark Stone, Alex Tuch and Mattias Janmark also scored for Vegas. Marc-Andre Fleury made 31 saves to improve to 5-0-0 against the Sharks this season and 7-0-1 in his last eight.

"They're scoring every night, and they're looking dangerous doing it," DeBoer said of his team's offense. "That for me is what we're looking for, even on nights when the pucks don't go in, we're creating momentum, we're getting chances, we're putting pressure on the other team."

Timo Meier and Tomas Hertl scored for San Jose, which is now mired in an 0-6-1 slide. Josef Korenar made 35 saves.

The Sharks took a 2-1 lead just past midway through the second period before the Golden Knights scored four unanswered goals.

"The hottest team in the league, it's not just us," San Jose coach Bob Boughner said. "We're a team that doesn't match up on paper to them. So a lot of things have to go right for us. They find ways to win. Our power play has to get going, it's been dry for a while. That's the difference in these tight games. You have to have good special teams when you go against these guys."

The Sharks were 0-for-3 on the power plays against the league's second-best penalty kill.

On the power play, Pacioretty fed Stone, who wrapped the puck around Korenar to knot the score 2-all with 7:08 left in the second period. It was Stone's team-leading sixth power-play goal of the season, while Pacioretty became the 10th active U.S.-born player to collect 600 career points.

Tuch blasted home the go-ahead goal with 50 seconds left in the second, giving Vegas its first lead of the game.

Marchessault netted his second goal and third point of the night when he beat Korenar short side, extending Vegas' lead to 4-2 with 6:42 left in the game.

Janmark, who was acquired from Chicago at the trade deadline, scored an empty-netter for his first as a Golden Knight with 56 seconds to go.

"I liked our resiliency, I liked our calmness tonight," DeBoer said. "I thought after the first period, we could've been up three. We stuck with it. We took some penalties we found to kill off, get some big saves at the right time. There wasn't any panic there."

MS Dhoni's parents, in his hometown of Ranchi, have tested positive for Covid-19 and were admitted to a hospital on Wednesday. Dhoni has chosen to stay on with the Chennai Super Kings for their IPL 2021 campaign, and Stephen Fleming, the team coach, confirmed that the franchise is "well aware of his family's situation, and the support has been set up for MS and his family."

"From a management point of view, we're well aware of his family's situation, and the support has been set up for MS and his family. Talking with MS, the situation is under control for now but we will monitor that over the next few days," Fleming said in a press interaction after the Super Kings beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by 18 runs in Mumbai on Wednesday. "Obviously, it's a tough time for everybody, and the fact that it's affecting India the way it is, but also reaching the IPL with friends and family - hopefully not into the bubbles, but we've spent quite a bit of time talking about care of the friends and families in the wider group.

"We have that responsibility to make sure that he's got the support he needs and we hope that his family recovers quickly."

Some of the IPL teams have been affected by Covid-19, which has seen a huge surge in India in recent weeks, more than others. The Knight Riders' Nitish Rana had tested positive on April 3 after arriving in Mumbai, but has since recovered and has been a part of all his team's games so far. The Delhi Capitals' Axar Patel tested positive after checking into the team hotel in Mumbai, and is yet to take part in the IPL action, while many others - Kiran More, the Mumbai Indians wicketkeeping consultant and talent scout, the Royal Challengers Bangalore's Devdutt Padikkal and Daniel Sams, as well as members of the Wankhede Stadium groundstaff, have all suffered from the virus at different stages, and to varying degrees, so far.

Elsewhere, Liam Livingstone, the English batsman who was a part of the Rajasthan Royals set-up, returned home citing "bubble fatigue" after travelling from one bio-secure bubble to another over the past many months. Similarly, Mitchell Marsh had informed the Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of the tournament that he wouldn't be taking part in the IPL because of fears around the length of time he would be required to spend in bio-bubbles.

So far, 15 matches of the tournament have taken place, in Mumbai and in Chennai, and the juggernaut will now move to Ahmedabad and Delhi, and then Bengaluru and Kolkata, before returning to Ahmedabad for the playoffs and the final.

Bangladesh 378 for 2 (Shanto 155*, Mominul 107*, Fernando 2-75) vs Sri Lanka

Bangladesh completed four achievements by lunch on the second day against Sri Lanka. They moved to 378 for 2 in an otherwise circumspect session in which they added 76 runs. But this was part of their plan all along.

On the way, their captain Mominul Haque reached his first overseas hundred, his eleventh overall and his fourth against Sri Lanka. Najmul Hossain Shanto became only the second batter from the team to cross 150 in his maiden Test century. The pair also added 226 runs for the unbroken third-wicket stand, having now batted together for 79.3 overs.

They blunted Sri Lanka's bowling quite successfully, despite Suranga Lakmal and Vishwa Fernando giving away very little in their first spells of the day. They did limit the scoring but both Bangladesh batters were rather happy staying put, rather than pushing the scoring.

Haque broke free of his overseas frustration with a beautiful square-cut off Dhananjaya de Silva in the 21st over of the morning session. This was his slowest century having faced 224 balls; he struck nine fours.

Shortly afterwards, Shanto reached 150 with an outside edge as he attempted an inside-out shot against the same bowler. Haque's 181, against New Zealand in 2013, is the highest score as maiden ton by a Bangladeshi.

The visitors had earlier reached 302 for 2 on the first day, with Shanto and Haque going to stumps taking their unbroken stand to 150 runs. It was a follow-up to the 144-run second-wicket stand between Shanto and Tamim Iqbal, who had blasted 90.

Grizzlies' Jackson: Just being on court 'a big win'

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 22 April 2021 01:01

The Memphis Grizzlies blew an 18-point lead and lost to a starless LA Clippers squad, but a big part of Jaren Jackson Jr. felt victorious.

After missing the first 56 games of the season, Jackson finally made his 2020-21 season debut after undergoing meniscus surgery in August. The third-year forward finished with 15 points, eight rebounds and four blocks in 18 minutes during a 117-105 loss to the Clippers.

Jackson said he had "mixed emotions" about losing to a Clippers team that was without six rotation players due to rest or injury, but said of finally returning to the court, "This is a big win. It's been a long stretch for me."

The Grizzlies took their time bringing Jackson back. The 6-11 big man entered the game with 7:01 remaining in the first quarter and needed just over 30 seconds to hit his first basket of the season. He launched a 3 that bounced high off the rim, touching the top of the backboard before falling in. He also had a big driving dunk.

Jackson, who averaged 17.4 points last season, said as soon as he checked into the game, things felt like they were back to normal.

"As soon as I checked into the game, I couldn't help but laugh a little bit," Jackson said. "Just being out there in general was a win for me. Thank God that joint [the first shot] rolled in."

Grizzlies guard Ja Morant said he was thrilled to have the franchise's other young promising star alongside him again. He told Jackson to just go out and play his game and not try to force anything.

"It's a good sign," Morant said of Jackson's return. "We are all happy for him. We know how hard he has been working to get back. I know he was very excited. Everybody can see I was excited as well."

Even though the Grizzlies blew an early 38-20 lead to a Clippers team playing without Kawhi Leonard (foot) and Paul George (rest), Memphis (29-28) was excited to see Jackson back for the stretch run for a postseason berth. The Grizzlies currently are in the eighth spot in the Western Conference.

Memphis coach Taylor Jackson had high praise for Jackson's performance.

"Defensively, blocking shots, going for rebounds, communicating out there, being part of his growth there on the defensive end. Being an anchor for us. And offensively, just making the simple play but doing it with aggressiveness and force, and I really loved what he did," Taylor Jackson said. "He attacked the game. He's put in a lot of work, and the biggest thing was, he was out there having fun, and I know he is going to continue to build on this one moving forward."

Curry's 30-point run ends: 'It was a special ride'

Published in Basketball
Thursday, 22 April 2021 01:01

Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry's 11-game streak of scoring at least 30 points ended Wednesday night during a 118-114 loss to the Washington Wizards.

Curry shot 7-for-25 from the field, including a season-worst 2-for-14 from beyond the arc, and finished with 18 points. Despite the loss and the poor performance in Washington, Curry said he was proud of what he accomplished over the past month.

"It was a great run," Curry said after the game. "It was something that hadn't been done before. It was going to end at some point. Now you got to start another one. So it's just a matter of the next-play mentality. Just try to get rejuvenated when we go home -- to do it home, road, some big games, put a streak together. It was a special ride, for sure. And never really get too hyped up on individual streaks or accolades like that. There were some historical names that I was able to pass. And doing something at this age was pretty special."

Curry became the first player since Kobe Bryant to score at least 30 points in 10 straight games, and he is now the oldest player in league history -- at age 33 -- to score at least 30 in 11 straight games, after dropping in 49 points in Monday's win at the Philadelphia 76ers. Bryant accomplished his streak of 10 30-plus-point games from Dec. 7 to Dec. 26, 2012.

Curry never seemed surprised by the historic numbers he continued to put up.

"Peaking at the right time," he said when asked why he has maintained such a high level of play over the past month. "Usually, the trend of our seasons, or my seasons, getting better as each game goes, so I'm glad this season's no different. Just trying to continue to get better and build that confidence of playing my best basketball towards the end of the season."

Even after Wednesday's off night, Curry is still shooting 54.9% from the field and averaging 40.8 points during 11 games in April.

The Wizards threw different bodies at Curry all night, trying to force other Warriors players to beat them and contesting as many of Curry's shots as possible. It was a move that Warriors coach Steve Kerr predicted earlier in the week, and Kerr said he knows Curry will likely see more of that down the stretch.

"I thought the Wizards played well defensively," Kerr said. "Did some good things to get the ball out of Steph's hands. But nothing that Steph hasn't seen before. I thought we were gassed. I thought that included Steph and everybody -- we just didn't look like we had our legs out there tonight."

Before the game, Kerr praised Curry for his work ethic and the dedication he has shown to improving his game year after year.

"It looks like magic, but it comes from a great combination of genes and work," Kerr said. "There's no doubting that he comes from an incredible set of genes, given his parents being so athletic. Obviously, Dell was one of the great shooters in the history of the game, and you see Seth, also one of the best shooters in the league; so there's some genetics there, but the work ethic is what puts Steph over the top."

Curry and the Warriors head home for a Friday matchup against the Denver Nuggets. It'll be the first time all season that fans will be admitted into Chase Center following the restrictions that have been in place in San Francisco over the past year because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Warriors can have up to 35% capacity in the arena, and they are paying to have every fan tested if they don't have proof of a vaccination.

"We're going to enjoy the atmosphere," Curry said. "It's definitely noticeable if you have even just 1,000 fans in the seats. It makes a huge difference in the atmosphere -- and, obviously, at Chase, we had three-quarters of a season opening up a new building and then getting shut down [because of the pandemic]. And we've had a whole season now where we haven't had any fans, so you're kind of sick of looking at the blue tarp. You want to see some bodies in there, and we're going to enjoy the atmosphere."

In 1983, the Chicago White Sox would win the AL West title and make the postseason for the first time since 1959. At one point during the season, Texas Rangers manager Doug Rader, unimpressed with the White Sox's style of play, referred to it as "winning ugly." It became the team's slogan.

On Wednesday, the Oakland A's extended their winning streak to 11 in a row with the ultimate "winning ugly" victory over the Twins, a wild 13-12 contest. The A's scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the 10th without the benefit of a hit thanks to two walks by Twins closer Alex Colome and then two brutal two-out errors by Twins infielders Travis Blankenhorn and Luis Arraez.

Just 19 games into the season, the A's have already had a full season's worth of misery and joy. They started 0-6 and it was very much a case of losing ugly baseball. The Houston Astros and Los Angeles Dodgers destroyed the A's in those six games, outscoring them 50-13.

After splitting their next two games, the A's suddenly flipped a switch and have matched their longest winning streak since their historic 20-game run in 2002, immortalized in "Moneyball" when Scott Hatteberg won the 20th game with a dramatic walk-off home run -- after the A's had blown an 11-0 lead.

"I'm trying to get through this," A's manager Bob Melvin said after Wednesday's game. "Talk about a complete flip of the script. Not only did we get [beaten] the first six games, we got trounced. To come back and put together this type of run, it shows the fight of this team. They never got down."

Those Moneyball A's, even after the departure of Jason Giambi, were still a star-driven team, with Miguel Tejada, who would win MVP honors that season, plus the rotation trio of Barry Zito, Tim Hudson and Mark Mulder. This is a much different type of team, especially with Matt Chapman, the team's best player in 2018 and 2019, off to a slow start at the plate after also struggling in 2020 (and undergoing season-ending hip surgery). The rotation lacks an obvious ace and the bullpen had to replace the departed Liam Hendriks, the game's best closer the past two seasons.

Matt Olson is off to a terrific start, but he hit .195 last season. Maybe the A's found a gem in Jed Lowrie, who was an All-Star for Oakland in 2018 but who played just nine games the past two seasons with the Mets due to injuries. He's hitting .323/.400/.516.

As is the trademark of the Billy Beane/David Forst/Melvin A's, they do always find a way to compete. As with those Moneyball teams, they still buy heavily into the Three True Outcomes approach on offense -- home runs, walks and strikeouts -- although they're currently just 12th in TTO results, mostly because they're in the middle of the pack in strikeouts.

The Twins made two errors on routine plays to blow Wednesday's game, but it's worth noting that Mark Canha and Ramon Laureano did not strike out and managed to put the ball in play in those at-bats.

"Put it in play and something good can happen," Melvin said after the game.

Matt Olson keeps A's ahead with two home runs

Matt Olson hits two home runs as the Athletics keep the game tight vs. the Twins.

One area where Beane has zagged in recent seasons while other teams have zigged is spending money to bring in veteran relievers. Many teams have been viewing the bullpen as an area where they can save money since there seem to be an endless supply of young relievers who throw 95-plus and make the minimum salary. That doesn't necessarily mean they're effective though.

Beane and Forst seem to like proven relievers. The A's signed Trevor Rosenthal to a one-year, $11 million contract to replace Hendriks as closer, but he underwent thoracic outlet surgery in early April. While it's possible he'll return this season, that's a difficult procedure to come back from.

Jake Diekman's two-year, $7.5 million contract, plus a 2022 option, looks like a bargain as Diekman has become one of the best lefty relievers around. Yusmeiro Petit had a 2.74 ERA from 2017 to 2020 while pitching the most innings of any reliever in the league, yet the A's managed to re-sign him to a dirt-cheap, one-year deal of $2.55 million. He doesn't throw hard, so apparently other teams weren't interested. Oakland also signed Sergio Romo, and in spring training traded for Dodgers lefthander Adam Kolarek, one of the best lefty-on-lefty relievers.

Note the ages of that group: 30, 34, 36, 38 and 32. It's just a different way of doing business -- the Oakland way.

Are the A's for real or is this just an early hot streak? Well, given the early woes of the New York Yankees and Minnesota Twins, plus the Tampa Bay Rays potentially taking a small step back, and the San Diego Padres scuffling at 10-10, I voted the A's second in this week's power rankings. I'm a believer. Never bet against the underrated Melvin getting the most out of his team.

I see three major keys for the A's:

1. The young rotation needs to live up to its potential. Despite Oakland winning the division title last season, the rotation was more solid than special (16th in ERA, 13th in FanGraphs WAR). Obviously, it got off to a bad first turn through this season and Frankie Montas struggled on Wednesday, but the A's combined for four shutouts in their previous five games. Jesus Luzardo remains the one Oakland starter with tantalizing potential, but he's still just 23 with 89 career innings.

2. Olson and Chapman need to have big seasons. The two combined for 72 home runs in 2019 (even though Olson missed 35 games) and 22 last year, but also had big OBP issues in 2020 (.310 for Olson, .276 for Chapman). Canha and perhaps Lowrie are nice supporting actors, but Olson and Chapman have to carry the offense.

3. They need to figure out shortstop. They traded for Elvis Andrus to replace Marcus Semien, but that was a roll of the dice and he's hitting .143. Maybe they can live with Andrus' bat if his defense holds up, but the Rangers seemed to think his range had declined. It wouldn't be surprising to see the A's eventually shopping for an upgrade on the trade market.

For now, the A's are just enjoying the ride.

"Once the baseball gods happened, I knew we were going to win," Laureano said Wednesday.

A's fans don't usually view the baseball gods wearing green and gold -- too much postseason angst the past two decades -- but in a wide-open American League, maybe it's their time.

Mt. Washington Hillclimb Rescheduled For August

Published in Racing
Wednesday, 21 April 2021 14:42

PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H. — Officials with the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire, the organizers of the Mt. Washington Hillclimb on July 9-11, announced Wednesday that the event has been rescheduled for Aug. 13-15 at Mt. Washington Auto Road.

It was also announced that Subaru of America will return as the event’s title sponsor and that Yokohama Tire will join the event for the first time as the Hillclimb’s presenting sponsor.

“The Sports Car Club of New Hampshire is proud to welcome back Subaru of America as Title Sponsor of the 2021 Mt. Washington Hillclimb for the third consecutive event. We’d also like to welcome Yokohama Tire to Mt. Washington for the first time as the event’s Presenting Sponsor. Both Subaru and Yokohama Tire have a long history of success in motorsports across the globe,” said Rob Widdick, President of the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire. “In addition, the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire would like to thank the Mt. Washington Auto Road for once again hosting this world-renowned Hillclimb as well as the hundreds of volunteers who are crucial to the success of the event.

“Lastly, with the pandemic nearly behind us, we’d like to thank everyone, including the many competitors, for their patience and understanding as we’ve navigated this unprecedented situation to reschedule this historic Hillclimb.”

First run in 1904, the Climb to the Clouds took place as part of the famous Glidden Tour several months prior to the first-ever Vanderbuilt Cup on Long Island, N.Y., that was first run in the fall of 1904.

The initial Mt. Washington Hillclimb was also seven years before the first-ever 500-mile race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, which took place in 1911, and 12 years prior to the inaugural Pikes Peak Hillclimb in Colorado, which first took place in 1916.

The 7.6-mile “Climb to the Clouds” is, without question, one of the ultimate proving grounds for both drivers and automobiles anywhere in the world.

The serpentine tarmac and gravel road is lined with trees, rocks and dramatic drop-offs as it winds its way to the 6,288-foot summit of the Northeast’s tallest peak — Mt. Washington.

“Subaru is once again thrilled to support the Mt. Washington Hillclimb in 2021,” said William Stokes, Motorsports Manager for Subaru of America. “The Mt. Washington Auto Road provides a challenge unlike any other, and the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire has done a great job in putting on the event. Subaru has been able to set new records every time the event has been run since 2011, so we’re looking forward to more fireworks in 2021.”

Set for Aug. 13-15, the Subaru Mt. Washington Hillclimb presented by Yokohama Tire will serve as a multi-day motorsports festival filled with a variety of activities for all ages, including the Yokohama Tire Fan Zone, which will host antique vehicle displays, a variety of food and memorabilia vendors and an autograph session on Saturday.

The three-day weekend will be topped off with the return of the historic Subaru Mt. Washington Hillclimb presented by Yokohama Tire event, which takes place Aug. 15 on the 7.6-mile Mt. Washington Auto Road.

“It’s great to see the legendary ‘Climb to the Clouds’ return,” said Fardad Niknam, Yokohama Tire’s senior director of product planning & product marketing. “We’re thrilled to be the Presenting Sponsor of the 2021 Subaru Mt. Washington Hillclimb presented by Yokohama Tire and be involved with such a historic race. We look forward to working with the Mt. Washington Auto Road and the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire, as well as Subaru of America on this highly competitive, fan-favorite race.

“It will be a perfect venue to show the strength and versatility of our ADVAN tires.”

Race organizers from the Sports Car Club of New Hampshire are expecting a full 80-car competition field this year with some of the most talented competitors from across North America.

They’ll be driving an array of equally impressive hillclimb, time attack, road race and rally cars — all competing for “King of the Hill” honors in one of the most exciting events in all of motorsports.

“Since 1904, we’ve had a long history of car racing on Mt. Washington. When the first ‘Climb to the Clouds’ was held, we took our place in racing history and became a proving ground for man and machine,” said Tobey Reichert, General Manager of the Mt. Washington Auto Road. “We’ve continued with this great tradition off and on over the years and are thrilled to once again be getting ready for the Subaru Mt Washington Hillclimb presented by Yokohama Tire in August.

“We know that technology is changing year after year. Over the past several races we have seen an amazing skill-set behind these amazing machines. This summer we fully anticipate even more excitement and records to be broken.”

SHREVEPORT, La. — With an expected forecast in Louisiana that includes plenty of rain, officials from the USMTS and the hosting race tracks have postponed this weekend’s doubleheader for roughly five months.

Originally scheduled for April 23-24, the ninth annual Cajun Clash at Ark-La-Tex Speedway in Vivian and the USMTS debut at The Rev in Monroe will now happen Sept. 10-11.

On Wednesday, Sept. 8, the Summit USMTS National Championship fueled by Casey’s will kick off the quadrupleheader at 81 Speedway in Park City, Kan., and on Thursday, Sept. 9, the series will trek to RPM Speedway in Crandall, Texas, before hitting the pair of makeup races in Louisiana.

The next event on the USMTS schedule happens May 14-15, at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Kan., and Tri State Speedway in Pocola, Okla.
