T Natarajan's knee issue is keeping him out of action at IPL 2021, but he has not left the bubble to have a scan yet as that would mean he would need to quarantine for seven days to re-enter the team's bubble. Sunrisers Hyderabad captain David Warner said as much after Natarajan missed a second game in a row, against the Punjab Kings on Wednesday.

"He obviously has got a sore knee," Warner said at the post-match press conference. "Given the circumstances in these bubbles, if he goes and gets a scan, he obviously has to sit out for seven days; he has to go back into quarantine. We are just monitoring at the moment. The physios are doing their best to analyse from a face point of view. But he obviously has to go and have a scan at some point."

In Natarajan's absence, his replacement Khaleel Ahmed picked up 1 for 24 and 3 for 21 against the Mumbai Indians and the Kings respectively.

Last month, Natarajan had missed the first three T20Is against England as well because of knee trouble. He was picked for the fifth T20I in which he went for 1 for 39 in his four overs. He also played the final ODI against England in Pune, registering figures of 1 for 79 from 10 overs.

Natarajan had risen to prominence in the last IPL, where his yorkers made him a difficult bowler to score against in the death overs. After that his life took a fairytale turn: he was picked as a net bowler for the Australia tour but ended up making his debut for India in all three formats. Overall, he has played one Test, two ODIs and four T20Is for India.

Aldon Smith turns himself in over battery charge

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 21 April 2021 12:53

Seattle Seahawks defensive end Aldon Smith turned himself in Tuesday night after a warrant was issued for his arrest in connection with an alleged battery in the New Orleans area, according to the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office.

Smith turned himself in at St. Bernard Parish Prison shortly before 8 p.m. ET. He was booked and released Wednesday on $25,000 bond. Smith is scheduled to be arraigned July 14.

An arrest warrant was issued for Smith on Monday for an alleged second-degree battery that occurred Saturday evening. St. Bernard Parish District Attorney Perry Nicosia told ESPN that Smith allegedly choked a victim unconscious during a confrontation that began inside a coffee shop in Chalmette, Louisiana.

The alleged incident rises to a second-degree battery charge because the victim was rendered unconscious, according to Nicosia. He said the victim was taken to a hospital but did not have to stay overnight.

In a news release, the St. Bernard Parish District Attorney's office said that the alleged victim suffered "severe injuries" and that an offender convicted of second-degree battery faces a fine of up to $2,000 and/or up to eight years in prison.

According to a news release from the St. Bernard Parish Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a call for medical assistance, and when they arrived, they came into contact with a male victim who said he had been assaulted by an acquaintance of his. Detectives with the Criminal Investigations Bureau identified the suspect as Smith.

Two days before the alleged incident, the Seahawks signed Smith, 31, to a one-year deal worth $1,127,500 ($137,500 guaranteed). He had resurrected his career with the Dallas Cowboys in 2020 after missing more than four seasons because of an indefinite suspension by the NFL for multiple off-field incidents and violations of the league's substance abuse policy.

In a statement Monday, the Seahawks said, "We are aware of the reports regarding Aldon Smith. Aldon notified us and we are gathering more information. We have no further comment at this time."

For the first time, each team will play a 17-game schedule in 2021. Each team will receive just one bye week, even with the expanded schedule.

The NFL previously announced that the season will begin on Thursday night, Sept. 9, and will end on Jan. 9, 2022. The Pro Bowl will be played on Feb. 6, 2022, at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, and Super Bowl LVI at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles will take place on Feb. 13, 2022.

Antonio Brown settles dispute with ex-trainer

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 21 April 2021 12:53

Antonio Brown has resolved a civil dispute with former trainer Britney Taylor, who in a 2019 lawsuit had accused the wide receiver of sexually assaulting her.

A settlement was reached, but per the agreement, no terms can be disclosed, a source told ESPN's Jenna Laine.

"Antonio and Britney have been friends for over a decade. Several years ago they almost became business partners. Recently, they were involved in aggressive litigation. Having reflected on their relationship, both feel that the time has come to move on. Antonio is grateful for Britney's excellent training assistance. They are pleased that Antonio is doing so well with the Bucs and has a ring. Their dispute is resolved and they wish each other great continued success," Taylor's attorney, David Haas, said in a statement.

Brown is currently a free agent after playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season. General manager Jason Licht said Wednesday that the Buccaneers will continue to discuss a possible return for Brown.

"We've had discussions throughout the offseason and you can tell we've put an emphasis on bringing back our players from last year that contributed to our success, and he'd be no different, so we'll continue to have talks and see where it goes," Licht said.

Licht noted that the Buccaneers signed Brown last year when his dispute with Taylor was ongoing so the resolution "wasn't necessarily the deciding factor of whether or not we're gonna continue to talk."

In her lawsuit, Taylor said that Brown sexually assaulted her on three occasions in 2017 and 2018. Before that suit's filing, Brown and Taylor had entered into settlement talks, with sources telling ESPN's Jeff Darlington in 2019 that Brown declined to sign a $2 million-plus agreement.

Brown countersued Taylor in 2019 for defamation and interference with his NFL contracts and endorsements.

Brown and Taylor knew each other at Central Michigan before Brown entered the NFL draft in 2010, and the documents state the two had cursory communication from then until 2017.

According to Taylor's lawsuit, she and Brown met in a Bible study group at the school and became friends, then fell out of touch for several years before reconnecting in June 2017, with Brown hiring Taylor, who was a gymnast at Central Michigan, to assist in his physical training.

The New England Patriots released Brown in 2019 after the lawsuit was filed. Brown had joined New England after being released by the Raiders earlier that year but played just one game for the Patriots.

The NFL investigated the allegations and suspended Brown for the first eight games of the 2020 season for multiple violations of the NFL's personal conduct policy.

He signed with the Buccaneers last season just before their Week 9 game against the New Orleans Saints. Brown, 32, led the Bucs in receiving targets over the final five weeks of the regular season and did not record a single drop in 2020. He also caught a touchdown pass from Tom Brady in the Buccaneers' Super Bowl LV victory over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Brown spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers and was a seven-time Pro Bowl selection and four-time first-team All-Pro.

Floyd's brother backs Raiders after tweet uproar

Published in Breaking News
Wednesday, 21 April 2021 12:53

Philonise Floyd issued a statement of support Wednesday for the Las Vegas Raiders after the organization received backlash for a tweet following the conviction of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for murdering his brother George Floyd.

"On behalf of our family, I would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the Las Vegas Raiders organization and its leadership for their support of our family and for our nation's ongoing pursuit of justice and equality for all. Now, more than ever, we must come together as one and continue on in this fight. For the first time in almost a year, our family has taken a breath. And I know that goes for so many across the nation and globe, as well. Let's take this breath together in honor of my big brother who couldn't. Let's do it for George," Philonise Floyd said.

The Raiders' tweet, sent late Tuesday afternoon, read: "I CAN BREATHE 4-20-21." Floyd told officers, "I can't breathe," more than 20 times before he died when Chauvin pressed his knee into the back of Floyd's neck for about nine minutes last May.

Raiders owner Mark Davis told ESPN's Paul Gutierrez on Tuesday that the tweet was his idea and that he does not plan to delete it.

Davis told ESPN that he "meant no disrespect" to Floyd's family with the tweet and that he "took the lead" from Philonise Floyd, who said after the verdict, "Today, we are able to breathe again."

Davis told The Associated Press and The Athletic that he also didn't know that the phrase "I can breathe" was used by supporters of police in New York after the death of Eric Garner in 2014 and that he wouldn't have used that phrase if he had known the history.

Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter by a jury for his role in the murder of Floyd outside of a Minneapolis convenience store.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Jacksonville Jaguars are a little more than a week away from having the franchise quarterback they've been trying to find for two decades.

Trevor Lawrence is the best quarterback prospect since Andrew Luck (and maybe Peyton Manning), the fourth-highest-rated quarterback prospect ESPN NFL draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. has ever graded and a guy who lost just four games as a starter since his freshman year of high school.

He's so good that he prompted Gil Brandt, who drafted nine future Hall of Famers in 29 seasons as the Dallas Cowboys' vice president of player personnel, to describe him this way: "Trevor Lawrence is [John] Elway athlete [and] Manning accuracy. So I think you're getting the best of both of them." A franchise that hasn't done much right since having the NFL's best record in 1999 and has lost 10 or more games in nine of the past 10 seasons is expected to take Lawrence with the No. 1 pick in next week's draft (April 29-May 1, ESPN/ESPN App). Jaguars fans -- as well as those inside the organization, especially in ticketing -- are understandably ecstatic and hoping Lawrence is the key to the franchise finally having some sustained success and becoming an annual playoff contender.

But a bit of caution to temper the over-the-top expectations: Drafting a quarterback with the first overall pick is no guarantee of a future Super Bowl appearance. Or even a playoff appearance. And, in some cases, not even a season with a winning record.

What does history say?

Eight of the 25 quarterbacks taken first overall since the AFL/NFL merger in 1970 have reached a Super Bowl with the team that drafted them, but only three won a championship: Terry Bradshaw (Pittsburgh Steelers), Troy Aikman (Dallas Cowboys) and Peyton Manning (Indianapolis Colts). Three others -- Jim Plunkett (Oakland/Los Angeles Raiders), John Elway (Denver Broncos) and Eli Manning (New York Giants) -- won Super Bowls with subsequent teams, with Elway and Manning being traded shortly after they were drafted.

Eli Manning, who was drafted by the San Diego Chargers in 2004, is the last quarterback taken first overall to win a Super Bowl (2007 and 2011 seasons). Only two of the 11 quarterbacks taken first overall since Eli Manning have reached a Super Bowl -- Cam Newton, with the Carolina Panthers, and Jared Goff, with the Los Angeles Rams, lost the game. Five of the 11 haven't even made the playoffs. Bradshaw (four) and Aikman (three) are the only such quarterbacks to win multiple Super Bowls with the teams that drafted them. Eli Manning won two with the Giants, Elway won two with the Broncos and Plunkett won two with the Raiders. Somehow -- maybe because of Tom Brady's ridiculous seven rings (and counting?) -- Super Bowl victories have become one of the defining quarterback stats. That might be a little unfair because even those multiple Super Bowl winners had plenty of help, whether it was Hall of Fame receivers or running backs, top-10 defenses or multiple All-Pros and Pro Bowlers.

• Bradshaw played with four other Hall of Famers on offense (center Mike Webster, running back Franco Harris and wide receivers Lynn Swann and John Stallworth) in addition to the Steel Curtain defense that included four more Hall of Famers.

• Aikman played with wide receiver Michael Irvin and running back Emmitt Smith, both Hall of Famers, and Smith is the NFL's all-time leading rusher. Plus, the Cowboys finished in the top 10 in scoring defense and total defense in each of the three years they won the Super Bowl.

• Elway had three other Hall of Famers on offense: running back Terrell Davis, tight end Shannon Sharpe and offensive tackle Gary Zimmerman. Elway's two Super Bowl-winning teams also finished 11th or better in scoring defense and total defense.

• Peyton Manning's defense ranked in the 20s in scoring and total defense the year he won the Super Bowl with Indianapolis, but running back Edgerrin James and wide receiver Marvin Harrison went on to the Hall of Fame.

• Eli Manning didn't have a Hall of Famer alongside him on offense nor did he have a statistically stout defense, but he did get help from two incredible late-game throws and catches as well as a pass rush that harassed Tom Brady in both Super Bowl victories.

• Plunkett won his Super Bowls with his third team, the Raiders, after failing to do so with the Patriots (who drafted him in 1971) and the 49ers. Those Raiders championship teams had plenty of star power. Offensively, they had four Hall of Famers: running back Marcus Allen, offensive tackle Art Shell, tight end Dave Casper and guard Gene Upshaw. And they boasted three more on defense: defensive end Howie Long, cornerback Mike Haynes and defensive end Ted Hendricks.

Coaching can't be overlooked, either. Here's the list of head coaches for the six quarterbacks taken first overall who did win Super Bowls: Chuck Noll (Steelers), Jimmy Johnson and Barry Switzer (Cowboys), Tom Coughlin (Giants), Mike Shanahan (Broncos), Tony Dungy (Colts) and Tom Flores (Raiders). Noll, Johnson and Dungy are in the Hall of Fame. Flores will be inducted this summer.

Urban Meyer hasn't coached a down in the NFL, but he's one of the best coaches in college football history, winning two national titles at Florida and one at Ohio State and going a combined 148-24 with five conference titles at those schools. That could mitigate some of the pressure on Lawrence.

"Obviously, anytime you're the first pick overall you're going to feel some of that weight, too," ESPN college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit said. "But as far as that franchise needing to go in a different direction, I think the timing for him is good, because you've got a high-profile, first-year head coach that has many people every week dissecting his every move as much as the quarterback.

"Like, if that were a Doug Marrone, everything's going to be on Trevor Lawrence because he [Marrone] has been there for a number of years."

Jags are on the clock

Where does that leave the Jaguars and Lawrence after 8:30 p.m. ET on April 29?

That's when the real work begins. During the next few seasons, the Jaguars will need to build the roster with several players who go on to become Pro Bowlers or All-Pros (and maybe even Hall of Famers). Even if Lawrence does turn into the Elway-Manning combo as Brandt believes, he'll need some help. ESPN's Mike Clay has the Jags' roster grading out 31st out of 32 NFL teams entering the draft.

The Jaguars have four players who have made one Pro Bowl each on the roster (defensive end Josh Allen, wide receiver DJ Chark Jr., cornerback Shaquill Griffin and linebacker Joe Schobert), but only Allen and Chark did it with the Jaguars. Returner Jamal Agnew is an All-Pro.

Even though the game's greatest quarterbacks had help, they were the key to winning those Super Bowls. That puts immense pressure and expectations on Lawrence, as it has every quarterback taken first overall. But maybe it's a little more unfair in Jacksonville, because it seems like Lawrence is being counted on to essentially save the franchise. The Jaguars always seem to be considered a relocation risk, and owner Shad Khan is continually seeking new local revenue streams, which included an annual home game in London from 2013 to '19. That contract with the league expired after last season -- when the Jaguars were going to play two games there, which didn't happen because of the pandemic -- and the team would like to renew.

Sustained success and contending for a championship would certainly generate more local revenue. Having Lawrence become the league's next great young QB would be one of the keys to that.

"Every player [taken atop the draft], it's like you've got to win three or four Super Bowls to account for what it is," said former Tampa Bay general manager Mark Dominik. "If he gets in the postseason, he's doing his job. But Trevor's a rare guy. If you talk to any player at Clemson the last three years, he's been continuously praised through the years. I think it's an opportunity for him to go to a team that's a little more loaded than people realize and has a chance to make an impact offensively." High expectations are nothing new for Lawrence. He took over as the starter as a freshman and went on to win two state titles at Cartersville (Georgia) High School, was the nation's No. 1 recruit and followed Deshaun Watson at Clemson.

"I don't think there's anything that he's going to see in Jacksonville that's going to make him feel weight that he has not already felt and, to be honest with you, [it] is what he knows," Herbstreit said. "He's known that weight to a varying degree since he's been in middle school. I know that that's probably his greatest strength: how he'll handle the pressure of trying to turn a franchise around."

That's historically a tough ask, and some really good quarterbacks haven't gotten it done or didn't find sustained success. But there's a belief Lawrence could become the third quarterback drafted first overall since Eli Manning in 2004 to reach a Super Bowl. "I see no reason why he shouldn't be a good quarterback," Brandt said. "You don't win as many championships in high school as a true freshman starter in the state of Georgia, where football is very good, and then win [a championship] at Clemson if you don't have something going for you."

Pacers' Sampson gets 1-game ban for head-butt

Indiana Pacers forward JaKarr Sampson has been suspended for one game for head-butting San Antonio Spurs guard Patty Mills on Monday night, the NBA announced.

Mills was fined $25,000 for his role in the altercation, and Spurs forward Rudy Gay was fined $20,000 for escalating the incident by shoving Sampson.

The incident began with Sampson and Mills battling for rebounding position, and it continued to the next possession when Mills made contact with Sampson, and Sampson shoved Mills. Sampson then furthered the altercation by aggressively confronting and head-butting Mills with 9:32 remaining in the fourth quarter of the Spurs' 109-94 victory.

Sampson, who will serve his suspension Wednesday against Oklahoma City, was given a Flagrant Foul 2 and an automatic ejection. Mills and Gay received technical fouls.

Orioles OF Santander to IL, likely out 2-4 weeks

MIAMI -- Baltimore Orioles right fielder Anthony Santander went on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a sprained left ankle and is expected to be sidelined two to four weeks, manager Brandon Hyde said.

Santander was hurt running the bases in the first inning of Tuesday's game at Miami. X-rays were negative, and Hyde was relieved by a diagnosis.

"I was really pleased with the results we got," he said. "I was thinking the worst."

The Orioles recalled outfielder Ryan McKenna from the alternate training site at Double-A Bowie.

Brewers sign former All-Star Strange-Gordon

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 21 April 2021 12:50

MILWAUKEE -- Former All-Star Dee Strange-Gordon has signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers and has been assigned to the alternate training site in Appleton, Wisconsin.

Strange-Gordon, who turns 33 on Thursday, had gone to spring training with the Cincinnati Reds with a minor league contract and was released on March 26 after hitting .281 with no homers and four RBIs in 32 at-bats over 10 games.

He had been working out at shortstop with the Reds. Strange-Gordon has primarily played second base and also has experience in the outfield.

The Brewers wanted to address some depth concerns in the infield after trading Orlando Arcia to the Atlanta Braves this month and losing Tim Lopes and Mark Mathias to injuries in spring training. Lopes and Mathias are both on the 60-day injured list.

Starting second baseman Kolten Wong is on the 10-day injured list, though he's expected to be activated later this week

Strange-Gordon batted .200 with no homers, three RBIs and three steals in 33 games for the Seattle Mariners last season. He led the NL in batting average, hits and stolen bases in 2015 with the Miami Marlins. He also led the NL in steals in 2014 and 2017.

He made the NL All-Star team with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2014 and with Miami in 2015. He has a .286 career batting average with a .319 on-base percentage and 333 steals.

Astros extend catcher Maldonado for '22 season

Published in Baseball
Wednesday, 21 April 2021 12:50

The Houston Astros have reached a one-year contract extension with veteran catcher Martin Maldonado, general manager James Click announced Wednesday.

Under terms of the deal, Maldonado will make $5 million in 2022, a source confirmed to ESPN. The deal, which includes a $500,000 buyout, also has a $5 million vesting option for 2023 that becomes guaranteed if Maldonado plays in 90 or more games this season.

Maldonado, 34, has served two stints with the Astros and has emerged one of their core vocal leaders over these last couple of years. He is making $3.5 million in 2021, the second season of a $7 million, two-year contract.

He is off to a slow start offensively this season -- with only three hits and 17 strikeouts in 34 at-bats -- and has batted only .216/.291/.352 throughout a major league career that spans 11 seasons. But his value comes in his handling of the pitching staff and his defense, particularly his arm strength.

Maldonado won a Gold Glove Award in 2017 and ranks as the game's best pitch-framer in 2021.

He would have been eligible for free agency after the World Series.
