Cricket West Indies has named uncapped duo Keacy Carty and Nyeem Young among 16 players for a white-ball skills camp that will be held in Antigua from March 31 to April 13. Some of the prominent names, like Shai Hope, Brandon King, Darren Bravo, Roston Chase, Nkrumah Bonner and Shamarh Brooks, will also be part of the camp.

Carty was the Player of the Match for his unbeaten 52 in the final of the U-19 World Cup 2016, where West Indies beat India by five wickets. The 25-year-old, who represents Leeward Islands in domestic cricket, has played 33 first-class matches and 33 List A games. In white-ball domestic cricket, he averages 25.05 at a strike rate of 69.77.

Young, 21, was part of the West Indies team at the U-19 World Cup 2020, where he scored 140 runs in five innings at an average of 28.00 and picked up eight wickets. The allrounder has also played for Barbados Royals in the CPL.

"Keacy Carty was a reserve for the team which toured India in February," Phil Simmons, the head coach of West Indies, said in a CWI media release. "If there was any reason why players couldn't go he was the next batsman in line. He is one of the players we have looked at before.

"Nyeem Young is one of the potentially good young allrounders we have around the Caribbean, so we just want to bring them in and get them to understand what we expect of them if they get to that level."

Outlining the importance of the camp that will be held at the Coolidge Cricket Ground, Simmons said the stint would give the players a chance to get acclimatised to the white-ball setup while working on their game.

"The camp will be a chance for us to do some work with players in the white-ball formats, players who might have a chance to play in the coming white-ball teams later this year," he said. "The most important thing is that we will be doing things in the camp that we have not been doing well, such as rotating strike, sweeping, and playing spin better. It's about working on things that we're not 100% at yet. We have several players at the IPL who will be working at their games as well, so we're working with the players here to make sure they keep up the standard and improve."

West Indies have a busy international schedule ahead of them. They will travel to the Netherlands in late May for the first-ever bilateral ODI series between the two teams. Following that, they will head over to Pakistan for a three-match ODI series which was postponed in December 2021 after a number of Covid-19 cases hit the West Indies camp. Both series will be part of the World Cup Super League.

Later in the year, West Indies are also scheduled to host Bangladesh, India and New Zealand, with all three tours expected to have white-ball matches. The dates for these tours are yet to be announced.
