Rain Forces Postponement Of STSS Firecracker 50

FONDA, N.Y. – Wednesday’s $10,000-to-win Short Track Super Series Firecracker 50 at Fonda Speedway has been postponed to Sunday due to inclement weather.

The weather has been hit or miss in Upstate New York as of late, and while the day started out looking bleak, it turned for the better around mid-morning on Wednesday.

However, an impending storm changed course and headed straight toward Fonda Speedway, a disappointing outcome for fans planning to attend the Firecracker 50.

A new injunction by New York lawmakers found recently that outdoor events can have fans, and because of that the Fonda Fairgrounds parking lot was full with cars, campers and haulers, as many race fans were eager to finally sit in the stands and see some racing.

Last year’s Firecracker 50 produced what might have been the most thrilling finish in Fonda Speedway history. Stewart Friesen was forced to pit from the lead with less than 20 to go, but came back and barely edged out Matt Sheppard at the line to claim the victory in the first Short Track Super Series event held at the half-mile dirt track.

Series and Fonda Speedway promoter Brett Deyo made his rounds around the pits during the rain and talked to the competitors, as well as looked at forecasts for the days ahead.

Out of those discussions came the decision to use Sunday, July 5 as the rain date for the much-anticipated Firecracker 50 event.

“Looking at the future forecast and what is running around us,” Deyo said, “we did not want to take the chance, so Sunday was chosen over Tuesday.”

When the Firecracker 50 does take the green flag, it will be broadcast live via SPEED SPORT Network affiliate Dirt Track Digest TV.
