Randle to join Warriors amid CBA shutdown

Chasson Randle will sign a contract with the Golden State Warriors, his agent, Darrell Comer of YouFirst Sports, told ESPN.

Randle has reached a settlement with Tianjin of the Chinese Basketball Association, Comer said, and will be granted a FIBA letter of clearance as soon as his request is processed in Switzerland.

Two previous attempts to sign a 10-day contract were initially blocked by his Chinese team.

Randle was one of approximately 40 American players -- which include former NBA players Jeremy Lin, Lance Stephenson, Tyler Hansbrough, Ty Lawson and others -- in limbo as the CBA has indefinitely suspended its league due to the coronavirus outbreak. Randle played his last game on Jan. 21. The league is not expected to resume until early April, if at all, with most players still waiting for clarity about the status of their lucrative contracts, which are often worth in excess of several million dollars per season for top players.

The State Department issued a travel advisory on Feb. 2 advising U.S. citizens not to travel to China after the World Health Organization declared a public health emergency. Airlines around the world have suspended service to mainland China.

The viral outbreak that began in China has infected nearly 87,000 people globally, and nearly 3,000 deaths worldwide have been attributed to the virus. The World Health Organization has named the illness COVID-19, referring to its origin late last year and the coronavirus that causes it.

The coronavirus outbreak has had far reaching ramifications for basketball leagues around the world. Games in Northern Italy scheduled to be held in the pan-continental Euroleague and EuroCup this week will be held behind closed doors without fans, journalists and even non-essential club staff members, the Euroleague announced this morning.

In Lyon, France a domestic league game between ASVEL and Monaco was postponed yesterday, while Monaco's EuroCup game this week will be played behind closed doors. France has banned all indoor public gatherings of more than 5,000 people, according to the Associated Press. The EuroCup game in Turkey between Darussafaka and Virtus Bologna is in doubt after Turkish officials halted the arrival of flights from Italy, Iraq and South Korea, after previously grounding planes from Iran and China.

In South Korea, where the local Korean Basketball league has been on hiatus, the KBL has opted to hold the remainder of scheduled league games behind closed doors, opting to broadcast games on TV, ABC news reported. In Japan, leagues have been on hiatus for several weeks and a decision will come soon regarding how to proceed for the rest of the season, a source told ESPN.
