Source: Texans trading for Bengals RB Mixon

The Houston Texans are trading for veteran Cincinnati Bengals running back Joe Mixon, a source told ESPN's DJ Bien-Aime.

Terms of the deal have not been disclosed.

Mixon, a second-round draft pick out of Oklahoma in 2017, had been the Cincinnati Bengals' primary running back for the past seven seasons. In 2023, he rushed for 1,034 yards and 9 touchdowns and totaled 1,410 total yards from scrimmage.

The Bengals' rushing attack, however, lacked explosiveness last season. Before Week 18, when Cincinnati was eliminated from playoff contention, the Bengals ranked 27th in the NFL in running back carries that went for 12 or more yards, according to ESPN Stats & Information data.

Mixon, 27, was expected to be released after the Bengals had reached a deal with free agent running back Zack Moss. By trading him, Cincinnati saves $5.8 million against the salary cap.

Mixon started in 88 of his 97 appearances with the Bengals over seven seasons. He was named to the Pro Bowl in 2021, had four 1,000-yard rushing seasons and threw a touchdown pass in a Super Bowl LVI loss that capped Cincinnati's best postseason run in more than three decades.

Overall, Mixon rushed for 6,412 yards during his Bengals career, averaging 4.1 yards per carry and scoring 49 touchdowns. He also caught 283 passes for 2,139 yards and 14 more TDs.

ESPN's Ben Baby contributed to this report.
