Andretti Autosport Supporting Dan Wheldon’s Sons

Published in Racing
Saturday, 24 April 2021 11:33

ST. PETERSBURG, Florida – The late Dan Wheldon gave NTT IndyCar Series team owner Michael Andretti his first Indianapolis 500 victory in 2005.

Saturday morning at the Dan Wheldon Memorial Monument, located in turn 10 of the St. Petersburg Street Course, Andretti announced a karting deal for Wheldon’s sons, 12-year-old Sebastian and 10-year-old Oliver.

The developmental program is hoped to be the first step toward a potential IndyCar ride in the future for the two boys.

Two-time Indy 500 winner Wheldon was killed in a horrific crash at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on October 16, 2011 when his car went airborne and crashed into the fence.

Earlier that fateful day, Wheldon had signed a contract with Andretti to return to Andretti Autosport to replace the departing Danica Patrick in the GoDaddy ride. A few hours later, Wheldon was gone.

Nearly 10 years later, Andretti is about to honor that “Wheldon contract.”

“I guess we really did have that contract in the end, and that makes this even more special for the boys to be able to come full circle and be back here with Andretti,” Susie Wheldon, Dan’s widow and the boys’ mother, told SPEED SPORT. “It’s really special.”

Andretti has stayed close with the Wheldon family since the that tragic day in Las Vegas and has watched the two boys grow up. Now, he is ready to help them start their careers.

“We have a couple of young, hot shoes we have been watching since they were this tall,” Andretti said, raising his hand a foot off the ground. “Sebastian and Oliver are the real deal. I’ve been watching a lot of what they have been doing in karts and they have been running up front. I think they have been doing a great job. We want to help them get through the Road to Indy and to Indy cars. That’s the point.

“Dan was a great friend, and we miss him. It’s great to be here to help the two boys. I’m real proud of these kids. This is important because it is looking to the future. I believe in this.”

To Andretti, it’s all about family, and the Wheldons will always be part of the Andretti Autosport family.

“Dan was family to us, and we had a lot of on track success together. We see a lot of Dan in both Sebastian and Oliver and are very proud to officially welcome them into our racing family,” Andretti said. “No one will ever be able to replace Dan in their lives, but we’re happy to offer a network for mentorship to help the boys grow their careers. Karting is the first step, but we have hopes of helping foster promising Road to Indy, and eventually even IndyCar opportunities.”

Dan Wheldon famously said that he had to win the Greatest Spectacle in Racing twice so that each of his sons, would have a Baby Borg Warner trophy.

Already winning races in karting, the two boys are now on the path to winning their own Baby Borgs by joining Andretti Autosport.

“I’m really excited to be a junior driver for Michael Andretti and follow in my dad’s footsteps.  I hope Oliver and I can both win the Indy 500 too,” said Sebastian Wheldon.

“It would be so cool to race for Andretti Autosport one day. I think we will get to win a lot of races, just like my dad,” added Oliver Wheldon.

Under the new mentorship program, the Wheldons will carry the Andretti shield into three national level karting series: ROK Cup USA, Super Karts USA and the United States Pro Kart Series, all while competing with JC Karting.

The boys will receive oversight and career guidance from Michael Andretti and the Indianapolis-based team where the late Dan Wheldon recorded his first Indy 500 victory in 2005.

Through the years, Andretti Autosport has helped bring dozens of drivers through the ranks of open wheel racing through their Road to Indy efforts.

“I am so grateful to Michael for taking Sebastian and Oliver under his wing,” noted Susie Wheldon. “The junior ranks of racing are so difficult to navigate and to have the support of Andretti Autosport’s engineering resources will, I’m sure, make all the difference. I am reminded of Dan every time the boys pull on their helmets as they have the same determination and winning attitude.

“They often show some of Dan’s other traits too. Good luck, Michael – #DoubleTrouble.”

The two boys have already been active in karting including races throughout Florida and at such tracks as New Castle Motorsports Park and New Castle Raceway in New Castle, Ind.

When asked what his favorite race has been, Oliver responded like a true racer.

“The next race that I win,” he said.

Those are words that were spoken like a true Wheldon.

With uncertainty surrounding the Mackenzie Tour this summer because of the COVID-19 pandemic, the PGA Tour announced Thursday that it has launched the Forme Tour for non-Canadian members of the Canada-based tour.

The U.S.-based tour's schedule will run from June to September, featuring eight 72-hole, stroke-play events that will receive Official World Golf Ranking points. Two sites – the Auburn University Club in Auburn, Alabama, and TPC River's Bend in Maineville, Ohio – have been revealed while the remaining six will be secured later this spring.

“We are excited to offer this opportunity to our PGA Tour Canada members, and our commitment is to continue to do business with high-caliber golf courses,” said Greg Carlson, executive director of the Forme Tour, who previously filled the same role for seven years for PGA Tour Series-China. “Forme has shown a willingness to support these players in their career endeavors, and we’re extremely happy to work with such an impressive company and with facilities like the Auburn University Club and TPC River’s Bend—centerpiece sites of our season. We look forward to announcing the remaining schedule and venues in the coming weeks.”

The Forme Tour will adopt eligibility from the Mackenzie Tour, exempting the top 60 players from the 2019 Mackenzie Tour points list, PGA Tour University graduates and those earning status through Mackenzie Tour Q-School this year and last. The top 5 players on this year's final Forme Tour points list will earn Korn Ferry Tour membership for 2021-22, with second- and final-stage tickets also being awarded for KFT Q-School.

The Mackenzie Tour is still planning on conducting events for its Canadian players later this summer. Though a schedule has yet to be released, it is believed that those players will compete for Mackenzie Tour status in 2022.

Liverpool draw as Newcastle net in 95th minute

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 24 April 2021 10:25

Liverpool paid for squandering their chances on Saturday at Anfield against Newcastle United by conceding a goal in the fifth-minute of stoppage time for a 1-1 draw.

Mohamed Salah sent Liverpool hearts racing when he opened the scoring after just three minutes with a touch of pure class.

- Stream ESPN FC Daily on ESPN+ (U.S. only)
- Liverpool ratings: Salah 8/10, Alisson 8/10

The Egypt international jumped on a loose ball and hit a difficult shot into the top right corner.

However, there was late drama when Joe Willock scored in the 95th minute moments after Callum Wilson had a goal disallowed for a controversial handball.

It was an end-to-end game with both sides missing key opportunities to distance themselves from the other.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane all had good chances to increase Liverpool's lead that they failed to take.

It looked like Steve Bruce's side had nicked a point on 93 minutes when Wilson bundled the ball into the net but replays showed it had bounced off his arm.

That wasn't to be the last action of the game, though, as Liverpool failed to clear a long ball and Willock shot it past Alisson to rescue the point.

The result could be crucial in Liverpool's fight to secure Champions League football. They are in sixth place, a point behind Chelsea and West Ham United who are in fourth and fifth respectively and play each other later on Saturday.

For Newcastle, the draw puts them nine points clear of the relegation zone and in 15th position.

Klopp said after the game that Liverpool didn't deserve a Champions League spot as they did not fight hard enough on the day.

"In a specific way, we don't fight enough," he said.

"I didn't see us that we deserved today to play Champions League next year. But we will see what we can do. In a few days we will play Manchester United which will be a tough one as well. But we learn... or we don't play Champions League. That's it."

Klopp: We didn't deserve Champs League today

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has said his side didn't fight hard enough and don't deserve a Champions League spot after Newcastle United sneaked a 1-1 draw at Anfield on Saturday.

Klopp's side had 22 shots on goal throughout the game but only converted one through Mohamed Salah in the opening three minutes.

Joe Willock scored in the fifth minute of stoppage time to secure a draw for Steve Bruce's side and put a dampener on Liverpool's Champions League hopes.

"I don't think you can create much more chances, better chances but we don't finish the game off. We didn't play enough," Klopp said after the game.

"In a specific way, we don't fight enough. We had 70% of the ball and should have had 80, we created a lot of chances. So we had to create more and use them. But we don't do that well at the moment. It feels like a defeat.

"I didn't see us that we deserved today to play Champions League next year. But we will see what we can do. In a few days we will play Manchester United which will be a tough one as well. But we learn... or we don't play Champions League. That's it."

Liverpool are in sixth position, a point behind Chelsea and West Ham United who play later on Saturday.

Klopp's team have a number of important fixtures on the horizon if they are to qualify in the top four, including facing United on May 2.

Newcastle controversially had an earlier goal from Callum Wilson disallowed and Klopp said his side were "lucky" the decision went in their favour but didn't capitalise on it.

"We have to keep going, keep playing. But we kept them alive and they deserved the goal because they scored before," he added.

"It is another one with the new rules, unlucky for Wilson but it is handball, and we don't even take this present. We were lucky with that decision, but gave another chance away and it makes no sense. It's really tough to take."

Man Utd fans in anti-Glazer protest at Old Trafford

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 24 April 2021 10:25

Hundreds of Manchester United fans protested the Glazer ownership outside Old Trafford on Saturday, following the club's intent to join the breakaway European Super League.

Protests have been a familiar sight across the Premier League this week after United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester City announced their intentions to join six other clubs in a European Super League.

The decision was met with widespread anger from fans who forced the clubs into a U-turn on their decision to join the league.

A large group of Chelsea fans gathered outside Stamford Bridge on Monday and delayed the kick-off of their game against Brighton. During the protests, reports came through that Chelsea would not be joining the breakaway league which prompted the other clubs to follow suit.

Despite the fact plans for the league are now in ruins, the fallout has continued to run throughout the week as fans protest their club's ownerships.

United fans have been particularly vocal with a group of supporters breaking into the club's training ground in protest of the Glazer's ownership.

On Tuesday, the club's executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward also announced that he would resign from his position at the end of the year.

Several hundred Arsenal fans also protested outside the Emirates Stadium before the team's match against Everton on Friday to call for owner Stan Kroenke to sell the club.

United do not have a game on Saturday but travel to face Leeds United on Sunday.

Werner earns Chelsea vital win over West Ham

Published in Soccer
Saturday, 24 April 2021 12:30

Timo Werner scored for the first time in seven Premier League matches as Chelsea earned a vital three points in their quest for Champions League football as they beat 10-man West Ham United 1-0.

West Ham's job was made more difficult when Fabian Balbuena was sent off 10 minutes before the end.

Chelsea and West Ham are both vying for a Champions League spot and with Liverpool dropping points against Newcastle United earlier in the day, a result for either team at the London Stadium became even more important.

- Stream FC Daily on ESPN+

The result leaves Thomas Tuchel's side in fourth place, three clear of West Ham and four clear of Liverpool.

Werner, who has struggled at Chelsea since joining them last summer from RB Leipzig, scored a well-worked team goal after 43 minutes.

The Germany international took the ball out of the midfield and played it out left to Christian Pulisic. Ben Chilwell then squared the ball into the box for Werner who powered his shot past Lukasz Fabianski.

The goal came against the run of play with West Ham not dominating in possession but looking strong in defence.

Werner could have had a second approaching the hour mark but he skewed his shot wide rather than chipping it over Fabianski.

A VAR check on 81 minutes showed that Balbuena had raked his studs down Chilwell's leg in a poor tackle and he was sent off.

Derbyshire 267 (Madsen 76, Hosein 63, Rushworth 6-58) and 10 for 0 need another 374 runs to beat Durham 475 (Bedingham 257, Burnham 75, Conners 5-83) and 175 for 2 dec (Lees 78*, Bedingham 53*)

This feels like a game that Durham need to win. Nobody expected them to beat the champions, Essex, last week, but they came mightily close. Derbyshire are a different matter, just the sort of opponents to help Scott Borthwick, a new captain who has returned to his roots, experience that winning feeling.

Durham might have dominated this match, but after three days they cannot be entirely confident of winning it. They managed five overs at Derbyshire on the third evening, but failed to get a wicket to get the show on the road. Derbyshire will resume on 10 for 0, needing another 374 for victory, and acting as spoilers is not beyond them.

This was a featureless day, professional enough but with little to commend it in terms of entertainment. Derbyshire have known many third days like this: up against it, sticking at it, surviving as best they can. County members are understandably desperate to see some live cricket, but those who passed the time potting their dahlias had few reasons to be aggrieved.

Behind the game or not, much of the individual satisfaction rested with Derbyshire players, particularly Harvey Hosein who survived a half-chance to slip on 21 to complete a fourth successive half-century and is finally ensconced, belatedly perhaps, as their first-choice Championship keeper. Three of those fifties - against Warwickshire and then two against Worcestershire - were unbeaten so he finds himself with a palatable Championship average of 140.

Hosein is not entirely lacking wicketkeeping competition. His Championship understudy, Brooke Guest, a recent acquisition from Lancashire, is playing in this match as a specialist batsman and made a career-best 37. Durham also missed a chance to dismiss him, on 15, when he was sent back by Hosein, but Ben Raine's throw to the bowler's end was well off target. Durham will hope these fleeting opportunities do not come back to haunt them as victory chances diminish tomorrow evening.

Neither innings could be rated as memorable, but they were worthy enough and their seventh-wicket stand of 83 in 25 overs helped Derbyshire keep Durham in the field for 83 overs before their innings came to a halt at 267.

Their partnership was necessary when Wayne Madsen, the likeliest thorn in Durham's side, was dismissed without adding to his overnight 76. Paul Coughlin forced some unexpected bounce out of a docile surface and Madsen, shovelling to leg, popped a leading edge into the off side.

Few Durham bowling days take place without Chris Rushworth claiming attention in some form and two more wickets completed the 27th five-for of his first-class career. He is now the second highest wicket-taker in Durham's history and, barring mishaps, he will soon pass the man at the top of the list, Graham Onions. The assumption here is that he is good for many years yet, a bowler reliant on guile not pace, and that one day he will be receiving the same sort of recognition for longevity currently lavished upon Kent's Darren Stevens.

With a lead of 208, and 52 overs to bat, the best Durham could hope for appeared to be an overnight declaration. That eventuality seemed even likelier when the New Zealand batsman, Will Young, who is still to make a score of note in his three-match deal, dragged on a front-foot drive at a wide length ball, and Borthwick fell lbw, on the sweep, to the legspin of Matt Critchley.

Young made his Test debut for New Zealand late last year and, when he signed, Durham's director of cricket, Marcus North, observed that his cricket was "in a good place." It might well have been, but if anybody can explain the financial, developmental or human sense of short-term deals like this during a Covid pandemic and when the county game is mired in debt, please write to the usual address.

Alex Lees and David Bedingham stepped up the pace with an unbroken stand of 92 off 18 overs, helped by 21 overs of spin from Critchley and Madsen which went for five an over. The declaration came as a surprise to this observer, if not the two sides, which might even mean that Derbyshire will fancy a chase on the final day.

Kent 169 (Crawley 60, Bailey 4-46) and 209 for 1 (Bell-Drummond 108*, Cox 80) trail Lancashire 525 (Lamb 125, Wood 119, Bohannon 87, Vilas 53) by 147 runs

A century from captain Daniel Bell-Drummond has given Kent a fighting chance of a draw against Lancashire, steering them to 209 for 1 in their second innings in their LV= Insurance County Championship match at Canterbury.

The hosts still trail by 147 at the end of day three, but a heavy defeat had looked likely after they slumped to 169 all out in their first innings. Tom Bailey took four for 46 and Luke Wood three for 38 to give Lancashire a lead of 356, but after enforcing the follow on the visitors were frustrated for the final two sessions.

Bell-Drummond hit 108 not out and Jordan Cox made 80 in a stand of 176 for the opening wicket that helped take the Group Three fixture to a fourth day.

Kent were 85 for four overnight and their worst case scenario occurred when Bailey had Zak Crawley caught behind for 60 off the first ball of the day.

They resisted well for the next hour, until the introduction of Matt Parkinson, who had Heino Kuhn caught by Rob Jones at square leg for 21 in his first over, after a miscued sweep.

Darren Stevens was out for just one, having already been given a comical reprieve when he top-edged Parkinson to square leg. The ball was in the air for so long Stevens started walking, but he was dropped by Jones, making the fielder the most relieved man in the ground when he was lbw to Parkinson's next ball.

Bailey then removed Ollie Robinson and Fred Klaassen with successive balls, bowling the former for 21 and getting the latter caught by Keaton Jennings at first slip for a golden duck. The final ball of the session saw Miguel Cummins caught by Dane Vilas for 19, attempting to drive Josh Bohannon through extra cover, leaving Matt Milnes not out on 17.

However, the contrast between morning and afternoon could hardly have been starker, as Bell-Drummond and Cox batted through to tea, scoring freely to reach 141 for nought despite constant and increasingly frantic appealing.

The partnership lasted for over three hours until Parkinson had Cox caught by a diving Jones at cover but it was a fleeting success for Lancashire as Kent continued to resist. Bell-Drummond reached three figures with a single off a full toss from Parkinson and he was joined by Crawley, who was 13 not out at stumps.

Somerset 318 (Abell 88, Davies 59) and 115 for 1 (Lammonby 70*) beat Leicestershire 233 and 199 (Overton 5-25) by nine wickets

England all-rounder Craig Overton took five for 25 as Somerset bounced back from last week's defeat to Gloucestershire to bank 22 points from a three-day, nine-wicket victory over Leicestershire in LV=Insurance County Championship Group Two.

Overton, 10 of whose 18 overs were maidens, produced his best Championship bowling figures since 2015 as Leicestershire - without captain and mainstay Colin Ackermann because of his concussion injury - were bowled out for 199, England left-arm spinner Jack Leach backing him up with three for 43.

It left Somerset needing just 115 to win, which they reached in 26.5 overs for the loss of one wicket only as their prodigiously talented opener Tom Lammonby, the 20-year-old who hit three Bob Willis Trophy centuries in a stunning debut season last year, ended a run of poor scores so far this year with a fine unbeaten 70 that included 13 fours.

A fifth-wicket stand of 76 between Lewis Hill and Harry Swindells raised the home side's hopes of making a game of it after trailing by 85 on first innings. But as Leach denied Hill a half-century and Overton did likewise to Swindells, Leicestershire lost their last five wickets for 37 runs.

Three down for 48 overnight, Leicestershire lost their fourth wicket to the first ball of the day as Rishi Patel, Ackermann's concussion substitute, was caught at first slip driving loosely at Overton for 27.

By lunch the home side had turned an overnight deficit of 37 into a lead of 74 but they had lost Hill three runs short of a fifth consecutive half-century as a flighted delivery from Leach turned just enough to take the edge and give Lewis Gregory a catch at slip.

Swindells, who cut Marchant de Lange for six over the slip cordon as well as picking up five boundaries, was undone five overs after lunch by a short delivery by Overton, which he could only fend into the gloves of wicketkeeper Steven Davies to be out for 49.

Overton claimed his fifth wicket with a full, straight ball into Callum Parkinson's pads as Leicestershire teetered at 168 for seven.

Ben Mike played nicely for his 37 and his fifth boundary at least took Leicestershire's lead into three figures.

But then Leach took two wickets in two balls, Chris Wright groping at one that took the edge before Dieter Klein wastefully lobbed his first delivery straight to mid-on. Mike ultimately perished throwing the bat, caught at deep backward point off De Lange for 37.

A peach of a ball from Wright bowled Tom Banton and Tom Abell was dropped at second slip off Mike on six but otherwise it was plain sailing for Somerset, who reached tea at 51 for one from 15 overs, as they completed victory just before ten to five, an increasingly fluent Lammonby on-driving Harry Dearden for his 13th boundary to finish the job.

Gloucestershire 320 (Higgins 73, Bracey 65, Brathwaite 60) and 14 for 0 trail Hampshire 470 (Alsop 149, Holland 114, Dawson 65, Vince 52) by 136 runs

Hampshire enforced the follow-on late on day three at the Ageas Bowl after a dramatic final-session collapse saw Gloucestershire dismissed for 320 with spin twins Liam Dawson and Mason Crane taking five wickets between them after tea.

Gloucestershire closed on 14 for 0 after Kraigg Brathwaite and Chris Dent survived the last six overs, but trail the home side by 136, going into the final day having missed the chance to make Hampshire bat again by just one run.

The visitors looked to have frustrated the hosts' push for a third successive victory on a largely attritional day thanks to a slow pitch, before the game burst into life after tea when they lost 5 for 37.

An excellent 73 from Ryan Higgins in a 76-run stand for the sixth wicket with George Hankins, had frustrated Hampshire after they had bowled well early in the day.

Having resumed on 114 for 2, Tom Lace and James Bracey withstood some testing bowling from Kyle Abbott and Mohammed Abbas, who finished with 4 for 41, in the first hour of the morning.

However, Lace, having played with great restraint, couldn't resist playing at a rare wide delivery from Abbas and edged behind to Lewis McManus for 20.

Bracey, whose brilliant early season form has put him in the frame for an England call-up, played beautifully for his 65.

However, he will not want to see his dismissal to Abbas again any time soon after his stumps were rattled by a ball he played no shot to, in a rare lapse of judgement in his four-hour stay at the crease.

Ian Cockbain was then bowled by Abbas for 24 after lunch before Higgins and Hankins guided their side safely to tea at 271 for 5 with the draw looking the most likely outcome.

But Crane then took three quick wickets when he trapped Hankins lbw for 31, rattled the stumps of Higgins after he bottom-edged an attempted sweep, before dismissing Dan Worrall. for five.

Dawson, who toiled away for 41 overs, got the reward his efforts deserved when he dismissed Josh Shaw and Matt Taylor as Gloucestershire fell agonisingly short of not having to bat again. .
