Kane scores early in debut, ignites Oilers' victory

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 29 January 2022 20:35

MONTREAL -- Evander Kane scored in his Edmonton debut, capping a whirlwind week for the veteran forward, and the Oilers handled the struggling Montreal Canadiens, 7-2, on Saturday night.

Kane, brought in to add balance to a star-laden offense that features Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl but has struggled with its depth, scored 11:21 into his first period as an Oiler, redirecting Evan Bouchard's shot from the point.

Edmonton scored three in less than two minutes during the first, and scored first for the first time in 12 games en route to its fourth-straight victory.

"It's nice to contribute on a new team coming in, you want to show what you can do," said Kane, who signed on Thursday and was introduced to the Edmonton media on Friday. "Obviously, it was great to get the boys on the board early. And everyone kind of took off after that."

Zach Hyman and Draisaitl each had two goals and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Derek Ryan also scored for Edmonton. Hyman and Nugent-Hopkins had an assist apiece, while Duncan Keith and Warren Foegele each had two assists. Stuart Skinner made 21 saves for the road team.

"All four lines contributed and that was great to see," Kane said. "It made it easy for our team to roll lines and keep our foot on the gas."

Edmonton is the fourth franchise for the 30-year-old forward whose contract was dumped by the San Jose Sharks amid myriad issues. As the Oilers continue the season, and battle for the postseason, there will be questions about his past, from suspensions due to violations of COVID-19 protocols, a bankruptcy and a gambling addiction. But for one night, at least, the focus was on hockey.

"When you get onto the ice, you can kind of put everything else to bed," Kane said. "And hopefully that continues."

Josh Anderson and Tyler Toffoli scored for Montreal in its fifth straight loss. Sam Montembeault allowed six goals on 16 shots before being pulled after two periods. Cayden Primeau had seven saves in the third.

Kane, a two-time 30-goal scorer who has had at least 20 in a season five other times, will likely be used in several different line combinations while Edmonton searches for the right fit. After starting the season with five straight wins, the Oilers began Saturday night on the outside of the Western Conference playoff picture.

"When a new player comes in, they press, they want to make sure they contribute to their new team, and it's great for him to jump in and get one early," Edmonton coach Dave Tippett said. "He looks in decent shape. You can tell he's rusty, hasn't played in awhile, and he has to get up to speed a little bit. But it's good to get him up, and get him in the lineup."

Source: Chiefs' Mathieu (concussion) set to play

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 29 January 2022 20:35

Kansas City Chiefs safety Tyrann Mathieu is "good to go" for the AFC title game Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals, a source told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler on Saturday.

Mathieu suffered a concussion in Kansas City's win over the Buffalo Bills last week, but he has had no setbacks in the concussion protocol and is set to play barring a late surprise, the source said.

Mathieu, who was picked to play in the Pro Bowl, led the Chiefs in interceptions with three this season and returned one for a touchdown.

A nine-year NFL veteran out of LSU, Mathieu, 29, is in his third season with the Chiefs, following stops with the Houston Texans and Arizona Cardinals.

With Mathieu in the fold, Kansas City has made the past two Super Bowls, winning one, and now has an opportunity for a third straight appearance.

Sources: Packers' Getsy expected to be Bears' OC

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 29 January 2022 19:09

The Chicago Bears are expected to hire Green Bay Packers quarterbacks coach Luke Getsy as their offensive coordinator, league sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Saturday.

Getsy, 37, will join new Bears head coach Matt Eberflus, the former Indianapolis Colts defensive coordinator who was hired Thursday.

Getsy will be tasked with helping a struggling Bears offense that endured instability at quarterback, where Andy Dalton alternated as the starter with rookie Justin Fields this season.

Getsy's departure from Green Bay will leave another hole in the Packers' offensive coaching staff. Earlier this week, offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett accepted the Denver Broncos' head-coaching job.

List beats Zalatoris in Farmers playoff for first win

Published in Breaking News
Saturday, 29 January 2022 19:09

SAN DIEGO -- Luke List earned his first PGA Tour victory with a birdie on the first playoff hole at Torrey Pines on Saturday, holding off Will Zalatoris well after sunset to win the Farmers Insurance Open.

List began the final round five shots back of leaders Zalatoris and Jason Day, and had to wait nearly two hours after closing with a 6-under 66 to see if he had a shot for the first win in a career that began in 2013.

"I really believed I could win on this course, and it's a dream come true,'' List said. "I told myself if I was in a playoff, I was going to make birdie.''

Zalatoris missed the chance to secure his own first career victory when he barely missed an 8-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th, forcing a playoff. After both players rescued their errant playoff tee shots from a fairway bunker, List spun an exceptional 131-yard approach shot to within a foot of the cup.

After List tapped in and Zalatoris missed his 13-foot birdie putt, List celebrated in the gloaming with his wife, Chloe, while he held their daughter, Ryann.

"She's been telling me for a long time, 'Daddy, I want a trophy,' and I finally got one," List said after breaking through in his 206th tour start.

Zalatoris and List finished regulation at 15-under 273, setting up the fourth playoff in the past 11 years at the Farmers. Zalatoris shot a nervy final-round 71, finishing with 12 straight pars.

Zalatoris, last season's Rookie of the Year and Masters runner-up, will lament his final shot of regulation. The 8-footer left his putter straight, but slowed and hopped abruptly to the left in the final inches.

"I fought like hell all day,'' Zalatoris said. "I was more disappointed with what I left out there in the second and third round. I thought today I battled really well. The putt I hit on the 72nd hole, I thought I made it. I just needed a hair more speed.''

Top-ranked Jon Rahm, Jason Day and Cameron Tringale finished a shot back at 14 under, and Justin Rose was in a group of five players two shots back.

List joined Rahm as the only players to earn their first career wins at the Farmers Open.

After starting the final round five shots back of the co-leaders, List shot up the crowded board with a 66 that included seven birdies. Playing eight groups ahead of Zalatoris, List made four straight birdies on the front nine, but he really got rolling when he holed out of the bunker from 36 feet on the 12th.

With Zalatoris barely approaching the turn, List took a share of the lead at 15 under with a short birdie putt on the 16th, but then he badly missed a 4-foot par putt on the 17th.

And after finishing with a 13-foot birdie putt on the 18th, he settled in to wait. List chatted with his family in the dining room and even fetched a cookie for Ryann before warming up in the fading California sun.

List, who lives in Augusta, Georgia, also punched his ticket to the Masters for the first time as a pro. He also played in 2005 after earning the spot as the runner-up in the 2004 U.S. Amateur.

The tournament ended on Saturday to avoid a television conflict with the NFL's two conference championship games on Sunday. The leaders appeared to be headed for a Sunday finish anyway for much of the final round, thanks to the crowded leaderboard and the slow pace of play that raised the chances of a playoff that couldn't be resolved before sunset on the North San Diego coast.

The finish aside, Zalatoris' career is surging after he finished in a sixth-place tie at The American Express last week. The 25-year-old Texan who played at Wake Forest on an Arnold Palmer scholarship had a steady final round -- even if his 12th straight par was a heartbreaker.

Other contenders surged and faded behind Zalatoris all day. Most compellingly, two-time Torrey Pines winner Rahm was one shot off the lead when he missed a 14-foot par putt on the 15th. After he buried a 26-foot birdie putt on the 17th, he left a 17-foot birdie putt short on the 18th with a chance to rejoin the leaders.

Day leaped into a share of the lead with an eagle on the 14th, holing out from 118 yards by dropping it past the pin with a sublime backspin that took it straight into the hole.

Luke List birdied the first playoff hole to top Will Zalatoris for his first PGA Tour victory at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. Here’s everything you need to know from Saturday’s finish in San Diego:

Leaderboard: Luke List (-15; won in playoff), Will Zalatoris (-15), Jon Rahm (-14), Cameron Tringale (-14), Jason Day (-14), Justin Rose (-13), Joaquin Niemann (-13), Sungjae Im (-13), Pat Perez (-13)

How it happened: Zalatoris entered the final round tied with Day for the lead at 14 under, and after several other players, from Billy Horschel to Rose to Rahm, entered the winning conversation, it was Zalatoris, Day and List in the mix over the final handful of holes. List birdied the par-5 18th hole after hitting his first two shots into the rough to get in the clubhouse at 15 under. Day holed out for eagle at the par-4 14th hole to tie Zalatoris at 15 under, but he came up short on three straight shots into greens, at Nos. 15-17, and bogeyed Nos. 16 and 17 to end his threat. Zalatoris parred each of his final 12 holes after birdies at Nos. 5 and 6, and he missed an 8-footer at the last for the win, forcing a playoff with List, who, like Zalatoris, is known as an elite ball-striker.

After both Zalatoris and List drove it within inches of each other in a right fairway bunker on the first extra hole, No. 18, List splashed out and stuck his third shot to a foot. Zalatoris, who didn't hit a fairway with his last five drives, then missed from 10 feet to hand List his the win.

What it means: While Day, now ranked No. 129 in the world, was looking for his 13th Tour win, yet first since the 2018 Wells Fargo, the playoff was between two players looking for their first career Tour victory – the 37-year-old List, who lost a playoff at the 2018 Honda Classic to Justin Thomas, and the 25-year-old Zalatoris. List, in his 206th career Tour start, got the job done.

Round of the day: List used four straight birdies, at Nos. 3-6, and birdied two of his last three holes to shoot 6-under 66, a round that was only equaled by Austin Smotherman. If not for a bogey at No. 17, List would’ve shot 65 and won outright by a shot. Instead, he needed one more hole.

Shot of the day: Day’s hole-out eagle from 118 yards would’ve been a great winning moment, but it was still the best shot hit on Saturday.

Biggest disappointment: Justin Thomas. He began the day two shots off the lead, but he shot 74 (after a third-round 73) to fall to T-20, five shots out of the playoff.

Australia 337 for 9 dec and 122 for 4 (Mooney 63) lead England 297 (Knight 168*) by 163 runs

Charlie Dean's first Test wicket on the stroke of lunch has given England a slim chance at an unlikely victory after a valuable half-century from Beth Mooney had held the visitors at bay on the fourth morning with time for a result in Canberra running out.

England's offspinner picked up Mooney with the final ball before lunch when she a full toss attempting an ill-advised sweep and was hit flush on the toe infront of middle and leg. Mooney reviewed but the DRS confirmed the umpire's decision leaving Australia four down with a lead of 163 with 71.3 overs left in the Test match.

Mooney and Ellyse Perry (41) had combined for a much-needed 91-run stand to help Australia's lead swell to after beginning the day at 12 for 2 with a lead of just 52. The pair did have two huge slices of luck though with England keeper Amy Jones dropping both players off the bowling of Kate Cross.

Mooney, who had played positively throughout the morning, edged Cross on 40 pushing at a good length delivery that nipped off the seam. It was a very simple catch to Jones' left but the keeper closed her gloves too soon and it bounced off her gloves and run away for four.

Perry was on 30 four overs later when she attempted a booming drive on the up and got a thicker edge that flew towards first slip. Jones flung her right hand across infront of Heather Knight but the ball didn't stick and was parried away for two runs leaving Cross to slump to her haunches in disbelief at her misfortune.

Mooney and Perry played positively despite the errors. Mooney picked off anything straight or wide while Perry continued to drive in spite of the sideways movement from the seamers and was rewarded with the two shots of the morning off Cross, one a sumptuous straight drive past the umpire and the other a glorious drive threaded between cover and mid off.

Australia had some other nervy moments with a few edges going to ground while England burned two reviews as Sophie Ecclestone caused some problems with her left-arm orthodox spin. There was an lbw appeal against Mooney that Knight referred. The third umpire deemed Mooney got an inside edge as she hit her pad with her bat. England inquired as to the conclusiveness of the inside edge but it was spinning down leg any case. Ecclestone spun another sharply past Perry's outside edge and there was an appeal and review for both caught behind and a stumping but both were fruitless.

Ecclestone was finally rewarded for an excellent spell, trapping Perry lbw with one that slid straight after pitching in the perfect spot. Umpire Graham-Smith made another outstanding decision and Perry did not debate it.

Carlisle reminisces as Pacers meet Mavs in Dallas

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 29 January 2022 17:40

DALLAS -- Indiana Pacers coach Rick Carlisle returned here Saturday for the first time since resigning last summer following 13 seasons as Mavericks coach, which included leading the franchise to its only NBA championship in 2011.

"It's a little bit of an unusual day, but it's great to be back," Carlisle, 62, said before the game. Because his family still lives in the Dallas area, it was also a chance to visit at home as well as see people in the organization who meant a lot to him.

The Mavericks played a video tribute to Carlisle before the game, and he was given a standing ovation. Carlisle, tears streaming down his face, then waved to the fans and saluted Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.

Carlisle resigned June 16, 10 days after Dallas lost its first-round playoff series to the LA Clippers for the second straight year and one day after the resignation of longtime team executive Donnie Nelson. In making his announcement, Carlisle said his departure was solely his decision.

A week later, Carlisle was hired by the Pacers to begin his second stint coaching them. He coached Indiana for four seasons from 2003 to 2007. His first Pacers team led the NBA in wins with 61 but lost the Eastern Conference finals to Detroit. His 199 Indiana wins going into Saturday are second to the 250 of Frank Vogel, now coach of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Carlisle cited his relationship with Nelson as being "very, very special."

Carlisle recommended Jason Kidd, who played on the Mavericks' championship team, to follow him as Dallas' coach.

"He's done a tremendous job," Carlisle said. "His history here, as a player who was drafted here, a Hall of Fame player on a championship team here, I know the kind of warrior he is when it comes to winning and how smart he is. They're a major threat in the West."

"He helped all of us achieve that one goal that we play for, and that was to win a championship," Kidd said. "Set the bar high for the next coach or coaches."

Carlisle led the Mavericks to the playoffs nine times and captured two Southwest Division titles in addition to the 2011 championship, when Dallas won the Finals in six games over the Miami Heat behind Dirk Nowitzki. He owns the franchise records for career regular-season games coached (1,033) and wins (555).

The game Saturday was the second and last this season between the interconference teams. When Dallas visited Indiana on Dec. 10, Carlisle tested positive for COVID-19 the day before and had to quarantine. The Pacers won 106-93 under assistant coach Lloyd Pierce.

Carlisle's first game as an NBA coach was in Dallas, coaching the Pistons in October 2001, in the inaugural game played at American Airlines Center.

"I do remember this other locker room," he said.

Hand strain sidelines Nets' Harden vs. Warriors

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 29 January 2022 17:40

SAN FRANCISCO -- Brooklyn Nets guard James Harden was held out of Saturday night's game vs. the Golden State Warriors after an MRI on his right hand revealed a strain, coach Steve Nash said.

Nash said it's an injury that has been bothering the 32-year-old Harden for several days.

"James' hand has been bothering him for a few days," Nash said before the game. "But he thought it was nothing. And then it really flared up this morning when he woke up. Obviously he irritated what he was feeling [Friday] and then this morning he woke up with some irritation so we had a scan. I think what we're calling it is a hand strain from the doctor. Just unfortunate."

Harden's latest injury comes as a surprise given that Nash said he went through all of Friday's practice and was ready to play again after missing Wednesday's loss to the Denver Nuggets because of left hamstring tightness. Harden had the MRI in San Francisco on Saturday after waking up with discomfort.

"Clean of the bad stuff, but a strain for sure," Nash said of the MRI. "There's stuff on the MRI, so he's feeling something, feeling the strain. It's been bothering him, but he was like, 'Yeah, it's nothing'. Now it's a little more than nothing. He woke up with a marked difference in the hand."

Nash said Harden doesn't remember a specific event where the injury occurred, just that it has been bothering him for "a few days."

"He doesn't remember an event," Nash said. "But the scan shows the irritation, the strain and he has said he's had it for a number of days so I think the deduction would be that he must have irritated it shooting and lifting [Friday]."

The Nets are already playing without star forward Kevin Durant, who suffered a sprained left MCL in his left knee during a Jan. 15 win over the New Orleans Pelicans. Durant is expected to be out at least a few more weeks as he continues the rehab process.

Mavs' Porzingis exits game with knee soreness

Published in Basketball
Saturday, 29 January 2022 17:40

DALLAS -- Mavericks power forward/center Kristaps Porzingis exited Saturday's game against the Indiana Pacers in the second quarter due to soreness in his surgically repaired right knee.

The 7-foot-3 Porzingis underwent surgery during the 2020 offseason to address a lateral meniscus injury in that knee, which caused him to sit the final three games of the Mavs' first-round series loss to the LA Clippers that postseason. The recovery from that surgery caused Porzingis to miss the first nine games of last season, and his mobility was hampered throughout the 2020-21 campaign.

Porzingis played 11 minutes against the Pacers before the team announced that he would not return to the game. He has missed 19 games this season due to a variety of minor injuries and a bout with COVID-19, but Porzingis had not had any issues with his right knee.

Former Mavs coach Rick Carlisle, who returned to the Dallas for the first time with the Pacers, remarked before the game how much Porzingis' mobility had improved this season because he was healthy.

Porzingis missed a season and a half after recovering from a torn ACL in his left knee that happened in a February 2018 game that ended up being his last with the New York Knicks, who traded him to Dallas the next season.

Porzingis, who is in the third year of a five-year, $158 million contract, is averaging 19.7 points, 7.9 rebounds and 1.8 blocks per game for the Mavs this season.
