European Indoor 5000m record-holder notches up another victory as athletes impress in windy conditions for Bromley Twilight Invitational

Marc Scott continued his winning ways as he took 3000m victory on a packed night of racing at the Bromley Twilight Invitational which also saw Amelia Quirk stand out in difficult, blustery conditions at the Norman Park Athletics Track.

The European indoor record holder over 5000m, Scott had already impressed earlier this month when he broke the British record in winning the Podium 5km and he was to the fore again over the shorter distance, winning a high quality men’s 3000m A race which brought a fitting conclusion to an excellent meeting.

There might not have been any record-breaking this time, but in what was a very quick race Scott’s 7:43.38 – his second-fastest time ever – saw him win the battle for the line and stave off personal bests from James West (7:43.79), Jonny Davies (7:45.75), Alex Yee (7:45.81) and Philip Sesemann (7:52.42).

The 3000m B race honours went to James Gormley in a PB of 7:57.77, with Tom Lancashire second in 8:03.27 and Frank Baddick third with a PB of 8:03.94, while the C race was won by  Mark Pearce in 8:00.05 from Tom Mortimer (8:04.25) and Ellis Cross (8:06.36) – all PBs.

There were also personal bests for the top three in a hotly contested women’s 3000m A race, with Quirk marking her season’s debut by taking 17 seconds off her previous best mark when clocking 8:54.09 to beat Verity Ockenden’s fine run of 8:56.72, with Nicole Taylor finishing third in 9:12.18.

The women’s 3000m B race was won by Almi Nerurakar in a PB of 9:21.34, with Kate Avery coming second in 9:22.43 and Phoebe Barker third with 9:48.10.

Jess Judd was a convincing winner of the women’s 1500m. In her first outing over the distance this year, the British international clocked 4:10.03 from Beth Kidger’s 4:15.22 and a PB of 4:16.71 from Sabrina Sinha. The men’s 1500m A race went to Adam Clarke in 3:41.57 from Tom Dodd’s PB of 3:44.25, while Ian Crowe-Wright was third in 3:44.69.

In the 800m events, Josh Lay won the men’s A race in a PB of 1:46.78 from Alex Botterill’s PB of 1:46.82, with Yusuf Bizimana also clocking a best with 1:48.18. In the women’s races, the A race went to Issy Boffey thanks to her PB of 2:02.10, with Katie Snowden second in 2:02.40 and Katie Kirk third in 2:02.98.

There was also a PB for Khahisa Mhalanga as she won the B race in 2:01.91, with Georgie Hartigan second with a best of 2:02.99. Louise Shanahan also recorded a PB with her time of 2:03.17 in third.

Meanwhile, at the Results Base MK5km PB Special in Milton Keynes, Omar Ahmed and Bronwen Owen took the men’s and women’s honours respectively on a night which saw hundreds of athletes competing over 5km in a series of small waves.

After her recent PB of 15:45 in finishing fourth at the Podium 5km, this time Leeds City athlete Owen was out in front in the A race as she clocked 15:57 in very difficult conditions to come home well clear of Eleanor Bolton (16:08) and Claire Duck (16:11).

In the men’s A race, Ahmed led from gun to tape with a run of 14:09, coming home ahead of Dan Jarvis (14:16) and Henry McLuckie (14:20).
